Baseball Drops Game Two To St. Bonaventure, 10-5

Minutemen and Bonnies set for the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts fell to St. Bonaventure, 10-5, in game two of the series at Handler Park at McGraw-Jennings Field on Saturday afternoon.   
 

UMass moved to 13-31-1 overall on the season, including 6-20 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure improved to 18-27 on the year and 9-17 in the league.

Carter Hanson tallied a team-leading three hits, which included a double, while five Minutemen had one hit each. Anthony Tirado also hit a double on the day. Jack Beverly led the team with two runs, while Tirado, Matt Travisano and Hanson all scored one apiece. Braden Sullivan contributed two RBI with Hanson adding one.

UMass got on the board first to take an early 2-0 lead. With two outs, Beverly reached first after seeing four straight balls. Hanson then doubled down the right field line, driving home Beverly to score the first run, before Sullivan hit a single up the middle with Hanson crossing the dish in the top of the first.

St. Bonaventure knotted up the game, 2-2, in the bottom half of the opening frame with a two-run homer.

The Minutemen reclaimed the lead in the top of the third. Back-to-back walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases up. On a double play, Travisano came across home plate from third, before Beverly scored on a wild pitch to give UMass a 4-2 lead.

The Bonnies tied the game up once again in the bottom of the third with a two RBI single to center field. A double put the Bonnies on top, 5-4, in the frame.

Massachusetts brought the game to a 5-5 tie in the fifth. Tirado led off with a double down the left field line. With two outs, Tirado stole third before scoring on an error by the catcher.

St. Bonaventure scored two more in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to win 10-5 on the afternoon.

Callen Powers (3-4) took the loss for UMass, giving up seven runs on nine hits, a walk and two strikeouts in six innings. David James (2-6) had the win for St. Bonaventure, allowing one run on three hits, walking two and striking out seven in four complete innings of work.

The series finale is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, on ESPN+ between the Minutemen and Bonnies.
