Baseball Falls To VCU On Senior Day

The Minutemen dropped a 7-4 decision to the Rams in the regular season finale.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball falters to VCU, 7-4, in regular season finale at Earl Lorden Field on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.

UMass finished the year 14-34-1 overall, including 7-23 in the Atlantic 10, while VCU concluded the season 17-37 overall and 10-20 in the league.

Jack Beverly tallied a team-leading two hits, including his eighth home run of the season, while scoring one run and contributing two RBI. Anthony Tirado, Carter Hanson and Mitchell Schroeder all had one hit. Tirado crossed the plate twice, while Zack Zaetta and Hanson totaled one RBI each.

VCU scored first with a solo home run in the first, before adding three runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-run homer, to take a 4-0 lead.

Beverly led off the bottom of the second with his eighth home run of the season to get UMass on the board at 4-1. The Minutemen came back within one in the third, tallying two runs. With one out, Tirado laid down a bunt, before Zaetta was walked. Hanson singled to right field to bring home Tirado to cut the deficit in half at 4-2. Beverly followed with a single of his own through the left side, allowing Zaetta to score from third and make it a 4-3 contest.

The Rams pulled ahead, 6-3, with two more runs in the fifth, including a solo home run.

The Minutemen scored a run in the seventh to make it a 6-4 game. Tirado was hit by a pitch to start the inning, before stealing second and third. A ground out from Zaetta helped Tirado cross the plate.

VCU hit another solo home run to take a 7-4 lead in the ninth. The Rams held off the Minutemen in the bottom of the final frame to win 7-4.

Callen Powers (3-5) had the loss for UMass, giving up six runs on nine hits, a walk and three strikeouts in five innings of work. Nick Freers (2-3) tossed four innings with three runs allowed on five hits, a walk and four strikeouts to receive the win for VCU. Zachary Peters picked up his fifth save of the season, pitching one innings with no runs, no hits, no walks and striking out two.
