Minutewomen Tally 10 Unanswered Runs en route to Extra Innings Victory
April 16, 2025 | Softball
Hannah Streicher earned the win for Massachusetts, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings in relief while striking out four batters. Lydia Castro claimed the first lead of the day for UMass in the top of the eighth, blasting a two-run home run into center field in what would be the game-winning runs.
The Minutewomen's comeback efforts began in the fifth inning when Riain Keefe brought home Ella Stevinson on a sacrifice fly to get UMass on the board. Brooke Musch got the momentum going in the final frame, doubling up the middle to get into scoring position. Sophia Thormeyer followed up with a two-out single to score Musch. Lily Woodworth and Castro and Riley Kairer each drew consecutive walks as Thormeyer scored on a passed ball, loading the bases with the score at 7-3. Odyssey Torres hit a grounded to shortstop, using her speed to beat the throw at first and score Woodworth and make it a 7-4 game. Katharine Heslin stepped up in one of the biggest moments of the game, notching a 2RBI single into right field to cut the deficit to just one run. Musch and Stevinson drew back-to-back walks, leveling the score at 7-7 as Torres crossed home plate.
Dartmouth would tally three-straight hits in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases for a prime walk-off opportunity with zero outs. The Massachusetts defense would silence the Big Green bats, as a fielder's choice and a double-play fly from Keefe to Castro sent the game into extra innings. Woodworth got the offense going in the first frame of extras with a double to left field. Castro shined with the spotlight on, crushing a two-run go-ahead home run into center to make it a 9-7 game. Kairer followed with a triple to left field, scoring off a foul-ball fly by Torres that was caught in right field. Streicher returned for the bottom of the eighth inning, getting the 1-2-3 frame to seal the 10-7 victory.
