Nine-Inning Thriller Secures Doubleheader Sweep Over George Mason
March 29, 2025 | Softball
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Massachusetts (8-21, 3-5 A-10) got back on track with a pair of quality wins over George Mason (13-20, 5-3 A-10), including a nine-inning comeback thriller in Game Two on Saturday.
It was a tale of two games production-wise, with neither team able to score until the seventh innning in Game One. Riain Keefe got the offense started in the third inning, singling to lead off the frame. Riley Kairer would single in the fourth inning for another lead off base hit, however UMass was unable to bring home either runner. Odyssey Torres would break the ice in the top of the seventh for the Minutewomen, blasting a solo home run to open the inning. Angie Rama would follow with a single to right field. Taylor Richardson would come in to pinch run for Rama, brought home by a Keefe RBI single to give Massachusetts the eventual winning run. The Patriots would answer with a run in the bottom of the seventh, however Julianne Bolton shut the door on a potential comeback to seal the 2-1 victory. Bolton pitched all seven innings, striking out four while only surrendering one earned run on the day.
Hannah Streicher put together her second-longest outing of her career, throwing all nine innings while tallying six strikeouts and only one earned run in the Minutewomen's 6-5 victory. Streicher's only earned run allowed came in the first inning of play, as a ground out scored George Mason's DeRosa from third. Brooke Musch would single in the third and score off an RBI double by Keefe to tie the game at 1-1. The Patriots would score two in the bottom of the fifth inning after Montgomery reached on a throwing error that resulted in both Montgomery and Chan crossing the plate. Errors in the sixth inning would increase George Mason's advantage to 5-1 as Massachusetts headed into the final inning of regulation with a four-run deficit. Freshman Katharine Heslin was unfazed in the face of adversity, launching her first-career home run to fuel the Minutewomen bats. Musch and Keefe rattled off back-to-back singles, with Musch scoring off a wild pitch to make it a 3-5 ballgame. Freshman Lily Woodworth would tie the game at 5-5 off a 2 RBI single to score Keefe and Sophia Thormeyer to force extras after Streicher notched the 1-2-3 inning. Woodworth would be the late-game hero once again in the top of the ninth, scoring fellow freshman Musch off a single that floated over the first basewoman's head. Streicher would silence any noise George Mason made in the bottom of the frame, claiming the 6-5 victory to clinch the weekend series.
