Softball Finishes Day One at Bevo Classic
February 14, 2025 | Softball
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Minutewomen (3-4) came up short in the first day of the Bevo Classic, dropping games to Maryland (4-2) and #8 Texas Tech (6-1) on Friday.
Massachusetts fought valiantly in the first game against Maryland, however struggles to overcome the Terps' pitching staff proved to be the deciding factor as they dropped a 4-0 decision to the BIG 10 opponent. Lily Woodworth led the offense with a triple and a double, going 2-3 in the game. Natalee Horton pitched six innings, striking out eight batters total. Hannah Streicher threw one scoreless inning in relief, striking out one.
The Minutewomen struck early in their first matchup against a ranked opponent this season, going up 3-1 in the second inning. Katharine Heslin and Ella Stevinson both singled to lead off the three-run inning, with Heslin and Riley Kairer capitalizing on two errors to cross home plate. Woodworth would bring Stevinson home off a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring surge. The Red Raiders would take control of the game in the following two frames, jumping out to a 10-3 lead. Massachusetts Heslin doubled in the bottom of the fifth to bring in Odyssey Torres for their final run of the contest, ultimately falling 17-4 in five innings.
