Massachusetts Softball Splits Friday Double Header Against George Washington

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team split its double header against George Washington on Friday afternoon. After the two contests, the Minutewomen sit at 15-30 on the season and 6-15 in conference play, while the Colonials sit at 16-25 on the season and 6-16 in conference play.

GAME ONE - UMass 2, George Washington 0 (9 inn.)
After a scoreless eight innings, the Minutewomen entered the ninth inning strong, as Abby Packard got on base with a single up the middle before her sister Olivia Packard hit her first career home run to put UMass over the Colonials with the first and only scoring play of the contest.

Jessie DiPasquale picked up the complete game shutout in the circle, throwing five strikeouts and allowing just six hits in all 9.0 innings.

GAME TWO - George Washington 8, UMass 5
The Minutewomen carried their scoring into the second contest, opening up the first inning with two runs. Abby Lamson picked up an RBI off an error that sent Giana Wameling home before A. Packard logged an RBI single that plated Chloe Whittier. Whittier launched a 2 RBI single in the fourth inning to score Emily Whelan and Jordyn Graime to extend the Minutewomen lead. 

George Washington then went on to score eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including a 3 RBI homer. The Minutewomen looked to recover when A. Packard hit another RBI single to bring Jules Shields home, but could not come back.

Julianne Bolton got the start in the circle, throwing a strikeout and allowing one earned run in 5.1 innings of work before Jenna Bradley stepped in, logging a strikeout in 1.1 innings thrown. Natalee Horton wrapped up the game as pitcher, throwing the remaining 0.1 innings.

The Minutewomen will wrap up their series against the Colonials tomorrow, Saturday, April 29, with first pitch set for 10 a.m. at Sortino Field.
