Massachusetts Softball Falters Twice Against Rhode Island

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped both games of their double header against Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon by scores of 6-0 and 9-4. The losses drop UMass to a 14-29 record (5-14 conference play), while Rhode Island improves to 18-27-1 (8-11 conference play).
GAME ONE - Rhode Island 6, UMass 0
The Rams started off strong, plating two runs in the first to take the early lead. URI then went scoreless until the fourth, when they added another run to the board before tallying three more unanswered runs in the sixth inning. In the circle, Jenna Bradley began the game, allowing three earned runs and recording a strikeout in 4.0 innings of work before Jessie DiPasquale entered the game for the remaining 3.0 innings, allowing three more earned runs and striking out three batters.
GAME TWO - Rhode Island 9, UMass 4
After a scoreless first three innings, UMass opened scoring with a strong fourth inning. Bella Pantoja kicked off the Minutewomen scoring with an RBI single up the middle to bring Emily Whelan home. Then, Jules Shields' RBI single plated Giana Wameling before Grace Cadden logged a 2 RBI single to right center that sent Shields and Pantoja home. The Rams then responded with nine unanswered runs, beginning in the fourth with one, continuing into the fifth with three, and concluding in the sixth with five.
Julianne Bolton got the start in the circle, throwing four strikeouts and allowing three earned runs in 5.0 innings of work before Natalee Horton relieved her, throwing three strikeouts and allowing five earned runs in the remaining 2.0 innings to conclude the contest.
The Minutewomen return to the diamond on Friday, April 28 for a double header against George Washington before wrapping up home conference play on Saturday, April 29 with one final contest against the Colonials.
