Shields' Career Night Lifts Massachusetts Softball Over Boston College, 6-5

BRIGHTON, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team picked up a road win on Wednesday evening. Jules Shields had a career night, recording 5 RBIs to hoist the Minutewomen over the Eagles, 6 to 5.  The Minutewomen improve to 9-17 on the season, while the Eagles sit at 16-14.

Shields opened up the day with an RBI double at the top of the first, allowing Giana Wameling to reach home and give UMass the early lead.

After two scoreless innings, Bella Pantoja scored on a passed ball at the top of the fourth. BC responded at the bottom of the fourth with four runs before Shields hit another RBI double in the top of the fifth to score Wameling once more.

At the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles scored once more on a sacrifice fly to take a two-run lead. Shields did not let this deter her, as she hit a three-run home run at the top of the seventh to plate herself, Chloe Whittier, and Wameling.

Jessie DiPasquale began the game in the circle, recording three strikeouts and allowing two earned runs in 3.0 innings of work. Natalee Horton then took over, throwing the remaining 4.0 innings. Horton recorded five strikeouts and only allowed one earned run to secure the victory.

UMass softball will host its home opener on Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2 as they embark on a three-game series against the Saint Louis Billikens. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. on Saturday at Sortino Field.
