Massachusetts Softball Splits Against Saint Louis

April 02, 2023 | Softball

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team split their two-game series against Saint Louis on Sunday, dropping their first contest but eking out a win in the second. The Minutewomen now sit at 10-18 on the season (2-6 A-10) while the Billikens sit at 14-18 (6-2 A-10).

GAME ONE: Saint Louis 12, UMass 1 (5 inn.)

The Billikens opened up the contest with three runs in the first two innings, followed by a five-run third. Bella Pantoja scored Chloe Whittier in the fourth inning, but Saint Louis answered quickly with a home run to wrap the contest up in five innings.

Natalee Horton got the start in the circle, recording four strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work before Julianne Bolton took over, recording two strikeouts in the remaining 2.0 innings.

GAME TWO: UMass 4, Saint Louis 3

Massachusetts struck first when Grace Cadden plated Abby Lamson on an RBI double at the bottom of the second. Whittier added a 2 RBI double to score Giana Wameling and Emily Whelan.

In the third, the Billikens looked to make a comeback as they tallied a run, but the Minutewomen kept their lead until the top of the fifth, when Abby Mallo walked to score Chloe Rhine. Mallo tallied another RBI when she singled to score Natalie Sullivan at the top of the seventh. However, the Minutewomen did not back down, as Wameling scored the final run on a wild pitch to win the game.

Jessie DiPasquale picked up the win in the circle, throwing five strikeouts and allowing two earned runs in 7.0 innings of work.

The Minutewomen return to the diamond on Wednesday as they travel to UConn for a 6 p.m. contest before returning home once more to kick off a nine-game homestand with a three-game series against Loyola Chicago on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8.
