Massachusetts Softball Swept By Dayton On Saturday Afternoon

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Massachusetts softball team saw its first day of action against the Dayton Flyers on Saturday afternoon, dropping both contests. The Minutewomen now sit at 7-17 (0-5 A-10) on the season while the Flyers improve to 15-10 (2-0 A-10).

GAME ONE - Dayton 9, UMass 3

Abby Packard opened up scoring on the day when she sent Sarah Keagy home on an RBI double at the top of the second. At the bottom of the second, Dayton responded when Nico Papavasilou singled up the middle to plate Taylor Erschen. They then wrapped up the inning with a Kaelene Walter fielder's choice reach, allowing Maddie Kapsimalis to make it home, and a Walter run scored off a RBI single by Emily Daniel.

Chloe Whittier hit a home run to open up the third inning before the Flyers' Erschen and Kapsimalis both hit RBI doubles to score Alyssa Caccini and Erschen. Quinn Pallardy hit an RBI sacrifice bunt to allow Kapsimalis to reach third and eventually score off a throwing error. Daniel reached off a throwing error to allow Walter and Pallardy to both reach home.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Keagy resumed scoring when she hit an RBI single to plate Bella Pantoja. Kapsimalis then hit a home run to score the last run of the contest.

Jessie DiPasquale started in the circle, recording a strikeout and allowing four earned runs in 2.1 innings of work before Natalee Horton took over. Horton recorded a strikeout and allowed one earned run in 3.2 innings of work.

GAME TWO - Dayton 11, UMass 3 (5 inn.)

The Flyers opened up the contest with a five-run streak in the first. Cacini homered to send Kara Gunter home before Kapsimalis hit a 1 RBI home run. Papavasilou hit the third home run of the contest to wrap the first inning up.

The Minutewomen responded promptly at the top of the second, when Abby Lamson scored Jules Shields with an RBI single and A. Packard homered to send herself and Lamson home.

At the bottom of the second, Cacini plated Emma Schutter and Kapsimalis scored both Cacini and Guntar. After a scoreless third inning, scoring resumed in the fourth when Kapsimalis homered. The contest wrapped up in the fifth inning with an Erschen 2 RBI single that sent Cacini and Ali Weekley home.

Julianne Bolton represented the UMass pitching squad in the circle, recording three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.

The Minutewomen will compete once more against the Flyers tomorrow, Sunday, March 26 at 11 a.m. before heading to Boston for one against Boston College at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29.
