Massachusetts Softball Drops Two Against St. Joseph's

PHILADELPHIA - University of Massachusetts softball opened up their conference slate on Saturday, March 18 with a double header against St. Joseph's. The Minutewomen now sit at 7-13 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 10-11.
GAME ONE - St. Joseph's 2, UMass 0
The Hawks opened up scoring in the first inning when Meghan Sinkus logged a home run to put St. Joseph's up by one. They extended their lead to two in the fifth inning when Kaelin Cash homered to left field.
Jessie DiPasquale threw all 6.0 innings, recording four strikeouts and allowing seven hits and two earned runs.
GAME TWO - St. Joseph's 7, UMass 3
Bella Pantoja hit an RBI double in the first inning to score Giana Wameling and establish an early Massachusetts lead. The Minutewomen had two in scoring position with the bases loaded in the second, but could not capitalize.
The Hawks tied the contest at one when Erica Lawrence hit a sacrifice fly to send Madison Fife home. Then, Riley York hit an RBI double to score Jessica Gaughan. York was then scored by a Hailey Malito RBI double.
Jules Shields hit a home run at the top of the fifth to put the Minutewomen within one. Gaughan responded with a sixth inning RBI single to plate Fife. Kayla Tauber then scored off a fielding error before Sarah Cancila homered to send herself and Sinkus home.
Shields picked up another RBI when she reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Wameling to reach home.
Julianne Bolton worked for all 6.0 innings in the circle, recording a strikeout and allowing four earned runs.
The Minutewomen take on the Hawks once more tomorrow, Sunday, March 19, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
