Massachusetts Softball Shuts Down East Carolina, Norfolk State On Second Day Of Purple-Gold Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The University of Massachusetts softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, recording a 4 to 3 victory over East Carolina and a 17 to 7 victory over Norfolk State. The Minutewomen now sit at 7-10 on the season.
GAME ONE - UMass 4, ECU 3
East Carolina got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Taudrea Sinnie stole home. At the top of the fourth, Abby Lamson scored Chloe Whittier to even the contest. Abby Packard then hit a 2 RBI single to drive Jules Shields and pinch runner Jordyn Graime in. To wrap up the successful inning, Bella Pantoja hit a sacrifice fly to score A. Packard.
The Pirates' Sydney Yoder hit an RBI single to score Taylor Woodring and Bailee Wilson scored on a passed ball, but the Pirates did not make a comeback.
Jessie DiPasquale represented the UMass pitching squad in the circle, recording five strikeouts and allowing three earned runs in 7.0 innings pitched.
GAME TWO - UMass 17, Norfolk State 7 (5 inn.)
Giana Wameling tallied the first run of the game in the first inning off a passed ball. Shields then hit an RBI double and scored Whittier before Shields was sent home on a passed ball. Pantoja opened up the second inning by scoring on a throwing error before Wameling made it home off a wild pitch.
The Spartans threatened a comeback in the bottom of the second when Lily Potter hit an RBI single to plate Loren Hudson. Imani Moore then scored on a fielder's choice play. Leah Wisswell reached on a fielding error which allowed Potter to tally a run.
Whittier hit an RBI single to score Emily Whelan in the third inning. Wameling then stole home to score her second run of the game. Shields RBI singled to score Whittier before Grace Cadden hit a home run to record 2 RBIs.
Whittier recorded a 2 RBI double to plate Wameling and Whelan to extend the UMass lead in the fourth before Shields scored Whittier with an RBI single through the left side. Norfolk State's Rylie Gilbreath hit Wisswell in with an RBI single at the bottom of the fourth. Gabby Vaughan then hit a 2 RBI home run to plate Gilbreath.
UMass rounded out the scoring in the fifth inning when Wameling hit an RBI single to score A. Packard. Whittier hit another RBI single to plate Whelan, and Sarah Keagy recorded a sacrifice fly to score Pantoja.
Natalee Horton threw 3.0 innings, recording three strikeouts and allowing six earned runs before Julianne Bolton entered the game, throwing the remaining 2.0 innings, recording three strikeouts and allowing no earned runs.
The Minutewomen will see action against Norfolk State once more tomorrow, Sunday, March 12 at 9 a.m. to conclude the Purple-Gold Invitational.
