CHARLESTON, S.C. - The University of Massachusetts softball team opened up action at the CSU Buc Up Tournament on Friday at Charleston Southern. The Minutewomen were narrowly defeated by Providence, 2 to 1, as well as by Charleston Southern, 3 to 2.
Game One - Providence 2, UMass 1
The Friars opened up the first inning by plating two off a home run by Jacque Harrington. Payge Suggs lessened the Minutewomen's deficit by one in the bottom of the first off a passed ball with Grace Cadden at bat. The remainder of the game was scoreless, resulting in the Buccaneer win.
Jessie DiPasquale worked for 7.0 innings in the circle, recording six strikeouts and allowing two earned runs in the contest.
Game Two - Charleston Southern 3, UMass 2
The Minutewomen and Buccaneers got off to a late start due to a weather delay, but the Buccaneers got on the board first off a sacrificial bunt by Gracie Prince, allowing Ashley Meckley to score. Bella Pantoja and Emily Whelan plated one run apiece in the top of the third inning when Chloe Whittier picked up a pair of RBIs off a single up the middle for the Minutewomen lead. At the bottom of the third, Charleston Southern regained the lead when Meckley made it home on a fielding error and Harper Schoeneweis recorded a sacrifice fly to allow BriAnna Brooks to reach home.
Julianne Bolton put in 6.0 innings of work in the circle, recording a 1-2-3 out inning in both the fourth and fifth. The sophomore recorded six strikeouts and allowed only one earned run on the day.
The Minutewomen resume action in the CSU Buc Up Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 18 as they take on North Dakota at 10 a.m. and have a rematch against Charleston Southern at 3 p.m.
