Two-Run Fifth Inning Guides Minutewomen Over Flyers In Game Two, 2-1

Abby Lamson drove in two runs in the fifth to help UMass to a doubleheader split.
DAYTON, Ohio – Abby Lamson drove in two runs with a two-out single in the top of the fifth inning to help send UMass to a 2-1 win over Dayton on Saturday afternoon in game two of a doubleheader split. The Minutewomen dropped game one 2-0 before bouncing back with a game two win.
Kristina Day got the rally started with a one-out walk and finished game two with a 1-for-2 showing at the plate. Sarah Keagy followed with a pinch hit double to left center field to put two in scoring position for the MInutewomen.
Lamson brought both runners in with a pinch hit, two-RBI single to right field to give UMass its first lead of the day at 2-1.
The UMass outfield kept two Dayton runs off the board in both the first and fifth innings. Emily Whelan threw a runner out at the plate in the first to keep the Flyers to just one run. Jules Shields made a throw to home following a fly out in left field to get the Dayton runner out and end the fifth inning with the score remaining 2-1 in favor of the Minutewomen.
Julianne Bolton settled in for UMass in the circle after the first frame, retiring seven straight batters into the fourth inning prior to a Dayton base knock. Bolton and the defense stranded runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings to close out the doubleheader. The freshman picked up her eighth win on the year and struck out three with no walks in seven innings.
Dayton used a two-run first inning to guide them to a 2-0 lead in game one. The Flyers took advantage of a leadoff walk followed by consecutive singles for the game's first run. Dayton added one more on a sacrifice fly to pull ahead by two.
Amy Smith and Jules Shields each drew a pair of walks in the second game for the Minutewomen.
UMass and Dayton wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at noon.
