UMass Wins Game Three To Take Series Over Saint Joseph’s

April 24, 2022 | Softball

Jessie DiPasquale tossed her second shutout of the weekend as she finished with six strikeouts in the win.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts softball team secured its fourth Atlantic 10 series win of the season after taking game three over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at Sortino Field, 3-0. Jessie DiPasquale picked up her second shutout win of the weekend series as she went the distance and struck out six in the circle for the Minutewomen.

DiPasquale and the UMass defense got out of an early bases loaded jam in the second inning after the Hawks started off the frame with a walk and a double to put two in scoring position with no outs. DiPasquale responded with two straight strikeouts prior to a batter reaching on a walk before a groundout to Kristina Day at second ended the inning with the Hawks scoreless. Saint Joseph's threatened again in the seventh inning with the bases loaded before a two-out fly out to Emily Whelan in right field ended the game.

Saint Joseph's Emily Siler had a no-hitter going through five complete innings before the Minutewomen broke through for three runs on three hits and an error in the sixth inning to go ahead 3-0.

Payge Suggs broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single through the left side before Amy Smith walked to setup a Chloe Whittier sacrifice bunt that moved both runners into scoring position with one down. Suggs finished the game 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk and a run scored.

Kendra Allen drove in the game's first run the following at-bat with a RBI single up the middle to bring in Suggs and make it 1-0. The RBI marked the seventh of the week for Allen, who hit .462 over the five-game span.

Jules Shields followed with a sacrifice fly deep enough to center field to bring in Smith prior to a two-out wild pitch that scored a pinch running Giana Wameling for the third and final run of the game.

Abby Lamson added a pinch hit single to round out action in the sixth inning to finish with one of UMass' three hits on the day in a pitcher's duel. DiPasquale held the Saint Joseph's offense to just five hits in the winning effort.

The Minutewomen continue Atlantic 10 action next weekend with a three-game series at Dayton beginning on Saturday with a noon doubleheader. UMass was originally scheduled for a midweek home game against Dartmouth that has since been canceled.
