Softball Takes Game One Of Doubleheader Split Against Hawks

The series deciding game three is set for tomorrow at noon on Sortino Field.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team opened its three-game series against Saint Joseph's with a 2-0 shutout win in game one before falling in 10 innings in game two, 5-4. The Minutewomen and Hawks wrap up the Atlantic 10 series tomorrow with the series deciding game set for noon on Sortino Field.
Game One – UMass 2, Saint Joseph's 0
Jessie DiPasquale pitched her second shutout of the season to improve to 6-2 in conference play as she struck out seven in 7.0 innings of work with four hits allowed. DiPasquale stranded eight runners on base and came up with strikeouts to end the second, third and fifth innings to leave a pair stranded in each.
Amy Smith put the Minutewomen on the board in the third inning with a RBI single to left field that brought in Emily Whelan from third, who reached on a leadoff walk and moved all the way to third on a pair of groundouts. Smith finished the game 1-of-2 at the plate with a walk and a RBI.
Kristina Day added some cushion for UMass in the fifth inning with a solo home run to right field to leadoff the frame. Day's homer marked the team-leading fifth of the year for the senior.
Bella Pantoja, Payge Suggs, Chloe Whittier and Grace Cadden each added base hits for a UMass offense that finished with six in the series opener.
Game Two – Saint Joseph's 5, UMass 4 (10 inn.)
The Minutewomen battled back from down four runs early to eventually tie with a three-run fifth inning. Saint Joseph's took a 1-0 lead in its first trip to the plate before adding three in the third on three hits and one UMass error.
UMass plated its first run of game two in the bottom half of the third inning after Kendra Allen loaded the bases with her first of three hits in game two. Allen finished the game 3-for-3 with a pair of walks and a RBI.
Jules Shields picked up one of her two hits on the game the following at-bat to plate the first UMass run, hammering a RBI single to left field to bring in Suggs to make it 4-1 in favor of the Hawks.
The Minutewomen exploded for three runs on four hits in the fifth inning to tie at 4-4. Allen got the scoring started with a RBI single to bring UMass within two before Shields' second hit drove in a pair with a double down the left field line.
Julianne Bolton threw all nine innings in the circle for the Minutewomen, striking out 10 with 10 walks while allowing nine hits. The freshman fell to 7-7 on the year as the Hawks took advantage of a leadoff walk in the ninth to eventually score on a one-out fielder's choice on a hard-hit ball to third.
The Minutewomen finished with 11 hits in game two, with Suggs and Smith joining Allen and Shields as UMass hitters with multi-hit performances. Suggs added two runs scored for the Minutewomen to go along with her 2-for-5 game at the plate.
