Softball Takes Two To Open Weekend Series Against The Bonnies

UMass came from behind in the seventh inning of game one before racking up 15 hits in the game two win.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team won both games of its doubleheader against St. Bonaventure on Friday afternoon at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen rallied with three runs in the seventh to take game one 3-2 before racking up 15 hits in a 9-4 game two win.

Game One – UMass 3, St. Bonaventure 2
UMass entered their final at-bat in the seventh trailing the Bonnies 2-0 in game one before scoring three on three hits in the frame. Grace Cadden drove in Kristina Day with a triple to right field before a base hit by Emily Whelan put two runners on.

Bella Pantoja came through with one of her five hits in the doubleheader, this one a RBI single to score Cadden to make it 2-2. After a Payge Suggs intentional walk loaded the bases with no outs, Chloe Whittier was hit by a pitch to walk in Whelan with one out and make it a 3-2 final.

Whelan and Pantoja each finished with a team-leading two hits in the comeback win.

Jessie DiPasquale tossed all seven innings with one earned run allowed on the way to her sixth win of the season. The junior struck out seven to give her consecutive starts with at least seven strikeouts. DiPasquale retired nine straight Bonnies hitters from the second to the fourth inning before St. Bonaventure broke through in the fifth for their two runs.

Game Two – UMass 9, St. Bonaventure 4
The Minutewomen got on the board early in game two with three runs in their first trip to the plate behind three hits and two St. Bonaventure errors. UMass finished with 15 hits led by three hits each by Pantoja and Smith. Pantoja finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 at the plate with a pair of walks.

Kristina Day drove in a pair with a two-RBI single to cap off the three-run inning on her way to finishing game two with a pair of hits. Day singled again in the third to set up a Whelan RBI single up the middle to make it 4-0 after three complete.

The Bonnies struck in the fourth inning to pull within a run as they scored three runs on four hits to make it 4-3 prior to a pop up with the bases loaded to end the frame.

Jules Shields walked home a run in the fourth to push the lead to two before Amy Smith and Whittier each recorded RBI in the fifth to make it 7-3.

Cadden nearly homered in the sixth inning but settled for a RBI double to right field to score Shields before scoring on a Bonnies error two at-bats later to make it a 9-3 contest.

St. Bonaventure added a run in the seventh to bring the score to a 9-4 final.

Julianne Bolton struck out nine on the way to her seventh win of the season. The freshman allowed three earned runs and seven hits in the seven-inning effort.

The Minutewomen and Bonnies wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at noon on Sortino Field.
