UMass Sweeps A-10 Opening Doubleheader At Rhode Island

Jules Shields and Abby Lamson paced the offense with four hits each in the doubleheader.
KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Rhode Island at the URI Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon. Jules Shields and Abby Lamson paced the UMass offense with four hits each while Shields drove in a team-high four runs for the doubleheader.
Game 1 – UMass 8, Rhode Island 7 (10 inn.)
Abby Lamson and Payge Suggs each posted three base hits for a UMass squad that finished with 16 in the opening game of the doubleheader. Lamson added two RBI, including one in the top of the 10th with a RBI that proved to be the game-winning run.
The Minutewomen got out of an early jam defensively in the second as Jessie DiPasquale battled back from down 3-0 in the count to get the strikeout and leave two runners stranded as the game remained scoreless.
UMass followed in the top of the third with four runs on five hits to take a 4-0 lead. Abby Packard got it started with a solo home run to left center field before Lamson and Kendra Allen each had RBI singles. Jules Shields closed out the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field. Shields added another RBI on a double in the sixth with her second extra base hit.
After the Minutewomen brought two across on a Ram error in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead, Rhode Island's Rachel Zingerman hit a two-run, two-out home run to make it 6-3. Ari Castillo hit a three-run home run in the seventh to send it to extras tied at 7-7.
DiPasquale and the UMass defense came through in the clutch to keep Rhode Island off the board in both the eighth and ninth frames. UMass came away with two consecutive outs with a runner on third in the eighth while DiPasquale picked up a strikeout looking to leave the bases loaded in the ninth.
Game 2 – UMass 8, Rhode Island 2
Julianne Bolton tossed all seven innings in game two to pick up her third win on the season as she struck out four, walked two and surrendered six hits in the complete game effort. Bolton retired six straight batters after allowing a two-out walk in the first and held the Rams without an earned run in game two.
Chloe Whittier got UMass on the board in the fourth inning with the game's first run, sending a RBI single up the middle to bring in Suggs before Allen added a RBI of her own to make it 2-0.
The Minutewomen added five runs on five hits in their next trip to the plate to make it 7-0. Bella Pantoja started things off with a RBI single before Whittier added another RBI two batters later.
Shields drove in a pair with a two-out, two-RBI single to left field to cap off the inning and finished the second game with two RBI and a pair of hits.
Rhode Island brought in a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a five-run game before Allen scored on an error in the top half of the seventh to bring it to an 8-2 final.
The Minutewomen are set for their home opener at Sortino Field on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
