Softball Drops Doubleheader On Opening Day In Tampa

March 11, 2022 | Softball

Chloe Whitter recorded four RBI while Kristina Day hit her team-leading third home run.

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped a pair in the weekend opening doubleheader as they fell to Stony Brook 7-6 and to Army 5-4 on Friday afternoon. Chloe Whittier recorded four RBI to lead the Minutewomen while Kendra Allen and Kristina Day each added three RBI.

Game 1 – Stony Brook 7, UMass 6
The Minutewomen scored six unanswered runs after falling behind 7-0 through four and a half innings of play. Whittier and Allen led UMass with three RBI each in the opening game of the morning.

Stony Brook scored seven straight to open play with the help of a four-run third inning. The Seawolves got on the board after being held scoreless through the first two innings, driving in the first with one out before a two-run homer with two outs made it a 4-0 game. Stony Brook added two in the fourth and one in the fifth to make it 7-0.

Bella Pantoja and Payge Suggs got the fifth inning started with consecutive singles before Amy Smith recorded one of her three walks in the first game to load the bases. Whittier followed with a two-RBI double to left field to make it 7-2.

Kristina Day and Pantoja both singled in the sixth inning before another Smith walk loaded the bases once again for the Minutewomen. That set up a Whitter RBI single prior to Allen's bases clearing triple to left field that made it a 7-6 game.

Game 2 – Army 5, UMass 4
UMass fell behind 1-0 but plated four straight runs before Army's Maddie Wilkes hit a two-run walkoff home run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the Black Knights.

Whittier picked up her fourth RBI of the day to tie things up at 1-1 in the fourth after Payge Suggs reached with a leadoff single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.

Day hit her team-leading third home run two batters later, sending a three-run shot over the wall to make it a 4-1 contest.

Army came back with two runs with two outs in the bottom half of the fourth to make it 4-3 in favor of the Minutewomen before Wilkes' walk-off home run with no outs in the seventh.
