Minutewomen Fall To Broncos In Final Game Of Cardinal Invitational

Jules Shields started a three-run, two-out rally in the fourth with a triple.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Massachusetts softball team fell to Boise State 11-3 in six innings on the final day of the Cardinal Invitational on Sunday. The Minutewomen finished with eight hits on the game, led by two each from Jules Shields and Abby Packard.

Boise State plated three runs in both the second and third innings to take a 6-0 lead before a three-run fourth inning for the Minutewomen.

Shields started a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple for her second hit of the game to set up a Packard RBI single for the first UMass run. Emily Whelan kept the rally going with a single before Bella Pantoja drove in Packard with a RBI base hit of her own. Chloe Whittier capped off the inning the following at-bat with a RBI single to make it 6-3.

The Broncos added a pair on a two-run home run in the fifth and made it 11-3 with three runs on three hits in the sixth.

UMass loaded the bases with two outs in its final trip to the plate in the bottom half as Pantoja and Whittier both reached on walks. Amy Smith singled to reach base for the second time on the day before a groundout to end the game.

The Minutewomen are off next weekend but return to the diamond on March 4-6 at the Bulldog Classic in Athens, Ga.
