Softball Rallies In Game Two To Complete Doubleheader Sweep Of Rhode Island

The Minutewomen scored 11 runs over the final two innings of game two to rally back from down five.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team racked up 11 runs in their final two trips to the plate in game two to help secure a doubleheader sweep of Rhode Island on Tuesday afternoon at Sortino Field. In game one, the Minutewomen came out on top in five innings 10-1 before closing out game two with a 12-11 win.
Game 1 – UMass 10, Rhode Island 1 (5 inn.)
Jessie DiPasquale allowed just two hits in five innings in the circle for UMass in game one on her way to her third win of the season. DiPasquale struck out seven batters while allowing the Rams just four baserunners in the contest.
Offensively, the Minutewomen had seven different batters record a base hit while six different Minutewomen drove in runs led by two each from Amy Smith and Jules Shields.
UMass got on the board in all five innings of game one as the designated away team. Smith started off the scoring in the first inning with a RBI single up the middle to score Bella Pantoja. Hannah Bunker followed in the second with her first career home run after URI tied it at 1-1, sending a solo shot over the wall in right to put UMass up 2-1 after two. The Minutewomen went on to add three in the third inning as Caroline Videtto added a RBI single in the frame.
Caroline Deem pushed the lead to five runs in the fourth with a RBI single up the middle before Shields followed up with a two RBI single. Kendra Allen drove in one more prior to Smith's sacrifice fly to left that brought in Pantoja to bring the score to a 10-1 final.
Game 2 - UMass 12, Rhode Island 11
UMass stormed back from a five-run deficit in game two to secure the doubleheader sweep as the Minutewomen brought in 11 runs in the final two trips to the plate. UMass finished game two with 17 hits as four different Minutewomen recorded multi-hit games.
The Minutewomen tied game two up at 1-1 in the fourth on a Ram error before Rhode Island scored one run in the fourth and four in the fifth to pull ahead 6-1.
Bunker helped jumpstart the rally in the sixth inning with a RBI single through the left side prior to Abby Lamson's RBI double to center field. Allen followed with a bases clearing single moments later to tie the game at 6-6 before scoring on another URI error to give UMass its first lead of game two at 7-6.
Videtto pushed the UMass lead to two runs with a RBI single to center for one of her four RBI and four hits in game two. After Rhode Island took back the lead in the sixth with the help of a two-run home run, UMass rallied once again in their final trip to the plate in the seventh with four runs to go ahead by three. Deem knotted things up at 9-9 with a RBI single before Videtto's bases-loaded triple brought in three to bring the score to 12-9.
URI threatened in the bottom half of the seventh, scoring on a solo shot to open the half inning to cut the UMass advantage to two runs. Shields saved a run with one down, charging in on a single before making the throw to Abby Lamson at home in time for the second out of the inning. URI added one run with two outs before a popup in the infield ended the game.
Bunker and Day each finished with three hits for the Minutewomen in game two while Allen added two.
