Softball Splits Pair With Rhode Island

The Minutewomen won game one 12-0 in five innings behind four RBI from Hannah Bunker while Kendra Allen picked up five hits in the doubleheader.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team jumped out to a 6-0 lead in its first trip to the plate in an eventual 12-0 game one win in a doubleheader split against Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon at Sortino Field. Hannah Bunker led the way for UMass in game one with four RBI while Caroline Deem added two of her own.
Game 1 – UMass 12, Rhode Island 0 (5 inn.)
The UMass offense came out swinging as the Minutewomen jumped out to a 6-0 lead in their first trip to the plate in game one. Bella Pantoja and Kristina Day each picked up base hits consecutively to start off the big first inning before Kendra Allen walked to load the bases with no outs.
Amy Smith drove in the opening run with one of her two hits in the game before Deem's two-RBI single to center field added two to put UMass ahead by three. Bunker's first of two base-hits came with the bases juiced, a three-RBI triple to right center field to cap off the six-run first. Bunker went on to add another run with a bases loaded walk in the following half inning.
The Minutewomen added five more in the fourth inning to go ahead 12-0, starting with a Jules Shields RBI double that brought in Allen before Caroline Videtto singled to third base to add another. Alyssa Lyon capped off the scoring with a pinch hit three-run triple to left center field.
Jessie DiPasquale held the Rams to just two hits in game one, holding a no hitter up until the fourth inning as Rhode Island broke through for its first hit with one out in the frame. DiPasquale finished with 5.0 innings pitched and eight strikeouts.
Game 2 – Rhode Island 6, UMass 1
Rhode Island used a five-run second inning and added a one-run third inning to pull ahead 6-0 through three complete.
The Minutewomen went on to load up the bases in their final trip to the plate in the top half of the seventh after singles from Shields, Lyon and Videtto helped put three UMass runners on. Bunker crossed the plate with one down in the inning for the lone UMass run of the game following a Ram error in the outfield. UMass had a chance to cut into the deficit further after Day walked to load the bases prior to a diving grab by Rhode Island's right fielder that ended the game.
Allen finished 3-of-4 in game two as she was retired just one time in eight at-bats with five hits, two walks and a hit by pitch on the doubleheader.
UMass continues Atlantic 10 play this weekend with a four-game series on the road at Fordham. The series opens up on Friday at 3 p.m. with game one before a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
