Softball Takes Sunday Doubleheader To Sweep La Salle Series
April 18, 2021 | Softball
Caroline Deem led the Minutewomen with three hits in game one while Hannah Bunker drove in two in the game two win.
Game 1 – UMass 7, La Salle 1
UMass brought in all seven runs in their first four trips to the plate in the 7-1 game one win, opening up the first with a run before plating four more in the third. Jules Shields put together a RBI triple to start the scoring in the third before Deem drove in Shields on a RBI single to center field.
After an error allowed a UMass run to score, the Minutewomen put together a double steal to force a throw down to second with runners at the corners, allowing Hannah Bunker to score to give UMass a 5-0 lead.
Kristina Day added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth after La Salle got on the board with a solo home run in the top half, sending a RBI double to left field. Deem's third hit allowed the sophomore to pick up her second RBI of the game as she singled up the middle to score Day and give UMass a 7-1 advantage.
Jessie DiPasquale went the distance in game one, finishing with seven strikeouts and one walk in 7.0 innings of work.
Game 2 – UMass 5, La Salle 4
Bunker drove in her first of two runs in game two in the bottom half of the seventh to give the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead before La Salle put together a four-run fifth inning to go ahead 4-1.
Amy Smith picked up a RBI to start the scoring in a three-run fifth inning before Day crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Shields followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Kendra Allen from third and tie the game at 4-4.
Videtto started off the bottom of the sixth inning with a leadoff triple to right center field for her second triple of the ballgame. Bunker's second RBI of the game brought in Videtto the following at bat to give the Minutewomen a 5-4 lead that would hold for the remainder of the game. Videtto finished game two with a pair of hits and two runs scored while Payge Suggs added two hits of her own in three trips to the plate.
Jenna Bradley tossed 5.0 innings in game two before being replaced in the circle by DiPasquale, who earned her ninth win of the season after throwing the final two innings. DiPasquale held the Explorers to just one hit and earned a strikeout on her way to her second win of the day and third of the weekend.
The Minutewomen break from conference play this week when they head to Stony Brook, N.Y. on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Stony Brook.
