Minutewomen Drop Season Opener On The Road At Delaware

The Minutewomen return to action on Saturday at Boston College.
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped their season opener on the road Sunday morning at Delaware in five innings, 18-0. The Minutewomen return to the field on Saturday when they head to Boston College for a 1 p.m. start.

The Minutewomen held strong in the opening frame to keep Delaware off the board with a runner on third as Kristina Day snagged a line drive to leave the runner stranded. Delaware came back the following inning by scoring two runs after a pair of walks to start the inning before going on to score nine in the third and seven in the fourth.

Freshman Bella Pantoja started off the third inning with her first career hit, placing a bunt down the third base line for a leadoff single. The Minutewomen put a pair of runners on in the frame after Amy Smith singled to left field with two down. Hannah Bunker added a hit for UMass in the fourth inning as she singled to left field with one out.
