AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team fell in a pair of games on Saturday to Fordham as the Minutewomen and Rams wrapped up their four-game league series at Sortino Field.
Game 1 – Fordham 10, UMass 0 (5 inn.)
Fordham jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first game of the doubleheader, using a Bella Ayala two-run home run to spark a four-run first inning before the Rams' Ayala hit her second home run in the third. Fordham added four runs in the fourth inning to bring the score to a final 10-0.
The Minutewomen put together a trio of two-out singles in their final trip to the plate, starting with an Alyssa Lyon single before Caroline Videtto singled through the left side. Bella Pantoja followed with a hit of her own, beating out the throw to first from the Fordham shortstop.
Game 2 – Fordham 16, UMass 2 (5 inn.)
UMass opened the second game by seeing just eight Fordham batters in the first two innings as the Minutewomen led 1-0 after two complete.
Jules Shields opened the second with a leadoff double to right center field and advanced to third on a Lyon groundout to the right side of the infield. Videtto followed with one of her two RBI in the second inning with two down, sending a sacrifice fly deep enough to right field to bring in Shields.
Videtto added the second and final UMass run in the bottom half of the fifth-inning, sending a leadoff home run to left field on the second pitch of the inning. Pantoja followed with a bunt single before Kendra Allen walked to put two on for the UMass offense.
The Minutewomen are scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, April 7 with a non-conference game against UMass Lowell at Sortino Field. The A-10 series against Rhode Island scheduled for April 2-3 has been postponed due to URI's COVID protocol.
