Late Homer Sends Syracuse Past UMass In Pitchers’ Duel

Jessie DiPasquale struck out 11 and allowed just two hits in seven innings of work for UMass.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team came up short in a pitchers' duel on Friday in an eventual 1-0 loss to Syracuse at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen finished with five hits while holding Syracuse to just two in seven innings of action.

Jessie DiPasquale stymied the Orange offense in seven innings of work in the circle for the Minutewomen, allowing just two hits while striking out a career-high 11 batters. The sophomore got going early with two strikeouts in both the first and second inning, including back-to-back strikeouts with a pair of Syracuse runners in scoring position in the second to keep the game scoreless.

Bella Pantoja led the UMass offense with three hits on four trips to the plate while Amy Smith and Kristina Day added hits of their own. Pantoja picked up a pair of singles before hitting a triple off the wall in right field in the bottom of the fifth.

The Minutewomen looked to push a runner across in the sixth-inning after Smith doubled to right field to leadoff the inning, but left two runners stranded heading into the final frame.

Syracuse brought in the lone run of the afternoon in their final trip to the plate in the seventh as Gabby Teran hit a solo home run to left field. Teran finished with both of Syracuse's hits on the day.

UMass remains home on Tuesday when they welcome in Rhode Island for an Atlantic 10 doubleheader.
