Softball Takes Pair On The Road At Bryant Behind 25 Runs In Doubleheader
March 23, 2021 | Softball
The Minutewomen scored 15 runs in the opening game before adding 10 in game two.
Game 1 – UMass 15, Bryant 6 (6 inn.)
The Minutewomen built an early lead in game one, scoring five runs in the first inning and eight total through the first three as they pulled ahead 8-0. Eight different UMass hitters recorded a base hit in game one to help the Minutewomen score each inning of the game.
Deem led the offense with three hits in four trips to the plate as she highlighted the five-run first inning with a three-run shot to left field. The home run marked the first of her collegiate career.
Amy Smith helped get the offense going with a RBI single in the first before Jules Shields picked up a RBI base hit to center field. Deem followed up by picking up her fourth RBI of the contest, sending a single through the left side to put UMass ahead 7-0.
Bryant trimmed the UMass lead down to five with a five-run fourth inning after the Minutewomen pulled ahead 10-0. UMass responded with a run in the fifth inning to go ahead 11-5 before plating four more in their final trip to the plate in the sixth. The Minutewomen used some solid base running to score two on a pair of double steals prior to scoring their final two runs on an error and a bases loaded walk.
Game 2 – UMass 10, Bryant 2 (5 inn.)
The UMass offense needed a few innings to settle in during the second game as the day cap started off with a pitchers' duel before the Minutewomen plated seven runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth to close out the doubleheader sweep.
Deem got the Minutewomen started with a leadoff single in the fourth before moving to second on a Kristina Day sacrifice bunt. UMass put runners at the corners following a Caroline Videtto single while Abby Lamson brought home Deem with a RBI the following at bat for the first run of the contest.
Smith drove in two more with a RBI single to extend the lead to four before a Shields inside the park home run brought in three more to bring the count to 7-0 in favor of the Minutewomen.
After Bryant pulled within five on back-to-back home runs, the Minutewomen answered with three runs of their own in their next trip to the plate in the top half of the fifth. Bella Pantoja brought home the first run on a sacrifice fly while Videtto used some nifty base running to score all the way from second during the same play. Hannah Bunker followed with a RBI single of her own, hitting one just out of reach of the Bryant shortstop to bring home Alyssa Lyon.
DiPasquale tossed all 11 innings for the Minutewomen in the doubleheader, finishing game one with nine strikeouts before striking out five more in game two to finish with 14 on the afternoon.
The Minutewomen are set to return to action for their home opener at Sortino Field this weekend in a four-game series against Fordham starting on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
