Softball Drops Doubleheader In Home Opener Against Fordham

March 26, 2021 | Softball

UMass and Fordham conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts softball team fell in their home opener doubleheader to Fordham on Friday afternoon. The Minutewomen and Rams were slated for a single-game matchup before adding a second game to the Friday schedule due to inclement weather forecasted for Sunday's series conclusion.

Game 1 – Fordham 4, UMass 2
The Minutewomen responded quickly in game one to Fordham plating a run in their first trip to the plate, bouncing back with a two-run bottom half of the first inning to go ahead 2-1. Bella Pantoja got on with a leadoff walk and stole second before Kendra Allen sent a one-out RBI single up the middle to bring her in from second and tie things up.

Kristina Day followed with a RBI single to the left side for the second and final run of the frame. Jules Shields added a hit in the ending for the Minutewomen on her way to finishing the opening game with a pair of base knocks.

Fordham used a pair of two-out rallies in the fifth and sixth innings to pull ahead by a run in the top of the sixth inning before adding another in the seventh to go up 4-2.

Jessie DiPasquale tossed all seven innings for UMass, striking out seven batters while allowing eight hits.

Game 2 – Fordham 4, UMass 1
UMass held Fordham off the board in the opening inning of game two after the Rams put a runner on third with a leadoff triple. Pantoja helped keep that runner stranded on third with a double play effort, securing a pop up in foul territory and firing over to first to get the runner and retire the side.

The double play sparked a streak of 12 straight Fordham batters going down in order for DiPasquale and the Minutewomen. DiPasquale tossed the first 12 innings for UMass on the day before being relieved in the sixth inning of game two.

Fordham once again used a two-out rally to take the lead, this time in the fifth inning after a two-out walk and single allowed the Rams to take a 1-0 lead before a three-run home run extended the lead to four.

UMass got a run back in the bottom half of the sixth after Amy Smith and Shields put together back-to-back singles. Caroline Deem came through after Shields' single with one of her own, a RBI single up the middle that brought in Smith for the lone UMass run of the contest.

The Minutewomen will wrap up the Fordham series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon on ESPN3.
