Seven individuals win Academic Scholar-Athlete awards; entire squad receives All-Academic Team status
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recognized seven members of the University of Massachusetts tennis program, as well as the team as a whole, with a pair of academic accolades. Ashley Avery, Martina Bocchi, Jovana Bogicevic, Janja Kovacevic, Sarah Mezini, Anna Napadiy and Jasmin Tripathy each earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status for their work in the classroom while the squad won ITA All-Academic Team in recognition of their combined academic success.
The seven individual honorees are the most for the squad since the 2006-07 squad had as many. It also marks the 16th time the Minutewomen received the team award since the 1999-2000 season and the sixth consecutive year earning the squad recognition.
Avery, a senior in 2019-20, graduated with a degree in marketing. A four-year letterwinner from Wellesley, Massachusetts, she primarily played at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles during her senior season and previously earned academic recognition from the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll as well.
Bocchi won nine singles matches, with four at No. 2, and 13 doubles matches as a senior in 2019-20. Previously an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2016-17, Bocchi earned a degree in political science.
Bogicevic, a public health sciences major, totaled 11 doubles victories over the abbreviated 2019-20 season, and also won five singles matches. She moved into the No. 3 singles spot during the spring due to injury and produced a 3-1 record. Bogicevic earned Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll previously as well.
Kovacevic was 8-5 during singles play with eight more victories in doubles as a senior in 2019-20 before injury cut short her campaign. A double-major in computer science and mathematics, Kovacevic received consistent acclaim for her work in the classroom and on the courts. She earned ITA All-Academic in each of her four years and was a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection.
Mezini, a biology major, won three singles matches spanning her junior season including two at No. 6 singles during spring dual matches. Additionally, Mezini collected three doubles victories alongside Tripathy and a one with Bogicevic during the year. She is a three-time Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll selection as well.
Napadiy began the year at No. 3 singles, but moved into the No. 1 spot following injuries and claimed five spring dual match victories at the top spot during the shortened 2019-20 campaign. She was also 11-7 in doubles play throughout the year, including six wins at No. 1 doubles in tandem with Bocchi during the spring. The operations and information management major is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete award winner.
Tripathy, also an operations and information management major, won three matches at No. 5 singles during the spring campaign. She also secured five doubles victories on the year, including three at No. 3 doubles during dual match competition.
