March 06, 2020 | Softball
Danielle Ellis, Amy Smith and Kendra Allen each homered on the day while Juliana Shields added three hits.
Game 1 – Wisconsin 8, UMass 1

Samantha Torres helped prevent a pair of Badger runners from moving into scoring position in the contest, throwing out two runners trying to swipe second base
UMass nearly cut the 2-0 deficit to a run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Juliana Shields doubled to right center field with Emily Whelan on first, but Whelan was called out on a close play at the plate.
After Wisconsin used a two-run home run and a RBI double in the sixth inning to go ahead 7-0, plating two unearned runs with two down in the inning.
Ellis sent her second home run of the season to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning to trim the deficit to six runs before the Badgers added another in the top of the seventh.
Game 2 – USF 8, UMass 3
The Minutewomen held a one-run lead for the majority of the second game of the afternoon against the host-Bulls, but ultimately fell 8-3.
Abby Lamson helped put UMass ahead in the second inning with a RBI groundout to score Kristina Day from third. After USF tied it up on a RBI groundout of their own in the bottom half, UMass answered in the top of the third with a home run from Smith, her first of the season.
Allen went yard for the second time on the year in the top of the sixth following a USF run in the fifth that tied it at 2-2. Allen's homer sailed over the left center field wall to put the Minutewomen ahead 3-2 heading into the bottom half of the sixth.
USF answered back with six runs on six hits in the sixth to go ahead 8-3, taking advantage of a trio of UMass errors to build their largest lead of the game at five.
Shields led the way at the plate with a pair of base hits in four trips to the plate as the Minutewomen finished with eight hits in game two. Kiara Oliver finished the game with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work in the circle, holding the Bulls to just three hits through five complete.
The Minutewomen resume action at the USF Softball Stadium tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. against Iowa State before the tournament portion of the weekend begins at either 4:30 or 6:45.
