Softball Scores Season-High 14 Runs, Run-Rules USF On Day Two

March 07, 2020 | Softball

The Minutewomen added a season-high 15 hits led by three each from Alyssa Lyon and Kristina Day.

TAMPA, Fla.The University of Massachusetts softball team scored a season-high 14 runs on a season-high 15 hits to take down the weekend's top-seeded USF Bulls 14-5 on Saturday evening at the USF Softball Complex. Alyssa Lyon and Kristina Day each had three hits in the win over USF while Amy Smith, Caroline Videtto and Kendra Allen each added two hits.

Game 1 – Iowa State 3, UMass 1
Kiara Oliver tossed 6.0 innings in the circle for the Minutewomen in the opening game of the day, striking out eight while allowing no earned runs and four hits. After Iowa State took advantage of a UMass error in the opening frame to go ahead 1-0, Oliver responded by getting three straight outs, including two strikeouts, to leave a Cyclone runner stranded at third. The junior also came up with a key out in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Cyclones threatened to take the lead with a runner at third and two down.

Allen squared things up at 1-1 in the top of the fifth with her second home run of the weekend and third of the season, leading off the inning with a blast into right field. Smith, Samantha Torres and Abby Lamson each added hits for the Minutewomen on the game.

Iowa State went on to plate two more unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring both with two outs to take a 3-1 lead into the top of the seventh inning.

Game 2 –  UMass 14, USF 5 (6 innings)
The Minutewomen responded to an opening inning run from the Bulls with four runs of their own in the second inning on five hits to take a 4-1 lead. Lamson was hit by a pitch to start off the inning before Day picked up a bunt single to put a pair on for Lyon, who came through with a RBI single up the middle to tie it at one.

Hannah Bunker followed immediately after with a RBI single of her own, sending the first pitch in play to score Day from third. After a pair of UMass runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, Smith singled off the bag at second to score the third of the inning. Torres capped off the frame with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Bunker and put the score at 4-1.

UMass extended the lead to four runs at 5-1 in their next trip to the plate as Lyon picked up her second RBI of the evening on a single through the left side that scored Day from third after her leadoff triple to right. USF went on to plate four runs in the bottom half of the third to tie it at 5-5.

Day kept her hot streak going as the Minutewomen responded with another run in the top of the fourth to regain the lead. The sophomore doubled for her third hit of the game and second extra base hit to score Allen from third.

UMass broke things open with an eight-run sixth inning as Lyon added her third RBI of the day to push the lead to two runs before a USF error at the plate brought in two more runs. Caroline Videtto and Sam Torres each followed with RBI to stretch the lead to 11-5 with two outs.

Allen's second home run of the day and third of the weekend stretched the lead to nine runs at 14-5 as the sophomore came up with a three-run home run on her way to finishing the game with a apir of hits, three runs scored and two walks.

Jessie DiPasquale got her first collegiate win in the circle for the Minutewomen, tossing 6.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts.

The Minutewomen will play for the USF Tournament championship tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Wisconsin.
