Smith Helps Lift Softball Over Pittsburgh In Doubleheader Split

February 22, 2020 | Softball

Amy Smith came up with a two-out, two-RBI double in the sixth to guide UMass to a 2-1 win in game one.

GREENVILLE, N.C.Amy Smith came up with a two-out, two-RBI double in the sixth inning to guide UMass to a 2-1 win over Pittsburgh in a doubleheader split at the Pirate Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1 – UMass 2, Pittsburgh 1
The Minutewomen strung together their first two hits off the ball game in the bottom of the sixth inning after a pinch-hitting Abby Lamson reached on a hit-by-pitch to open the inning. After Kendra Allen re-entered and stole second, Caroline Videtto broke up the no-hitter in to put runners at the corners before recording a stolen base of her own.

Smith came through with a two-out, two-RBI double to right field that drove in Allen and Videtto to give the Minutewomen a two-run cushion heading into the top of the seventh.

Kiara Oliver and the UMass defense battled back with the bases loaded and no outs, allowing just one run to cross before Oliver secured a liner in the circle for the third and final out. Oliver tossed 7.0 innings, giving up just three hits and one hit through the first six innings on her way to striking out seven as she moved to 2-0 on the year.

Game 2 – East Carolina 7, UMass 3
East Carolina jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second and final game of the day, plating three in the first inning prior to bringing in two more in the third on three hits and an error.

The Minutewomen responded with a three-run top of the fourth inning to trim the lead down to two runs after a leadoff error and a pair of free passes loaded up the bases. Lamson brought in one run as she was hit by a pitch before Kendra Allen worked a walk to bring in the second of the frame. Madison Gimpl brought home the third and final run of the half inning, scoring Juliana Shields on a groundout with one down.

The Pirates went on to stretch their lead to four in the fifth with a pair of runs to bring the score to a final 7-3.

UMass is away from competition next weekend and will return to the diamond on March 6 when they take on Wisconsin in Tampa, Fla.
