Minutemen erase five-goal halftime deficit, Harvard scores eventual winner with 2:16 left
AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse trailed by five at halftime and three in the fourth quarter, and mounted a furious comeback to tie the game late, but ultimately fell to Harvard, 10-9, at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. UMass dropped to 1-2 overall with the loss and Harvard improved to 1-0 with the win.
Billy Philpott, Gabriel Procyk and Kevin Tobin all scored twice for the Minutemen while Chris Connolly, Mike Tobin and Jeff Trainor tallied once apiece. Connolly and Kevin Tobin each had two assists, while Kevin Cutinella, Charlie O'Brien and Mike Tobin dished out one each.
Zack Hochman finished 16-of-22 (.727) on faceoffs with six groundballs while Matt Knote made six saves in goal.
The starting close defense had eight of the team's 11 caused turnovers, led by a career-high four from Adam Towey while Sam Eisenstadt and Jackson Suboch provided two each.
Kyle Anderson led Harvard with five points on two goals and three assists. Austin Madronic chipped in two goals and dished out a pair of assists. Kyle Mullin made 17 saves in the cage, including eight in the first quarter.
Trailing, 9-6, with 11 minutes, 49 seconds to play in the game, Massachusetts poured in three goals in the span of two minutes, 30 seconds of game clock and evened the contest at 9-all.
Mike Tobin started the run when he fielded a pass from his brother, Kevin, and fired in his second goal of the season with 11:23 to go. At the 9:47 mark, Connolly dished to Philpott on the crease as Philpott cut the deficit to 9-8. Trainor knotted it up 57 seconds later when he picked the top-left corner from 10 yards away.
The Minutemen looked to take the lead back with four minutes to play when Connolly crashed the crease and dunked a shot into the back of the net; however, the officials waved off the goal and awarded possession to Harvard on a crease violation.
Harvard drew an unnecessary roughness penalty on Matthew Hill while clearing the ball up-field and scored during the subsequent man-up sequence. Nick Loring potted the eventual game-winning goal with 2:16 to go following a feed from Madronic.
Massachusetts held possession with the opportunity to tie in the final minute, but were unable to find the back of the net as Trainor fired back-to-back attempts over the crossbar at the 27-second and 19-second marks, before turning the ball over during one final push to the crease.
The Maroon and White trailed the Crimson 6-1 at halftime thanks in-part to Mullin's stout play in the cage as the 6-foot-3 junior turned aside 11 UMass shot attempts during the opening 30 minutes. Anderson and Madronic provided the offensive spark on the other end of Garber Field during Harvard's six-goal run with two tallies each.
Massachusetts led in shots, 42-29, shots on goal, 26-16 and groundballs. The Minutemen finished 13-of-14 on clears while Harvard ended just 17-of-25. The Crimson also turned the ball over 18 times to 15 by UMass.
