Call It A Comeback
  • Trailing by two headed into the fourth quarter, UMass fought back for a 9-7 victory at No. 12 Ohio State on Sat., Feb. 15. In the win, the Minutemen scored the final five goals and held Ohio State scoreless for the final 17 minutes.
  • Sophomore attack Gabriel Procyk and senior midfielder Jeff Trainor each had two goals during the span, while junior midfielder Kevin Tobin added one. Trainor also had an assist during the scoring streak, as did junior attack Chris Connolly.
  • Ohio State committed six turnovers in the final 17 minutes, while the UMass defense limited the Buckeyes to only five total shots (two on-target).

The Rarity Of A Rookie Between The Pipes

  • UMass started true-freshman goalie Matt Knote in the cage at No. 16 Army West Point, No. 12 Ohio State and Harvard.
  • He is the first true-freshman goalie to start the season-opening games since current associate head coach Doc Schneider did so in 2006.

Jumping Into The Thick Of It

  • University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse began the 2020 season with consecutive games against ranked opponents in No. 16 Army West Point on Feb. 8 and No. 12 Ohio State on Feb. 15. Both were road contests.
  • The last time UMass opened the year with back-to-back games against ranked opposition was 2015, when the Minutemen lost to a No. 20-ranked Army West Point squad, 12-7, and a No. 6-ranked North Carolina team, 20-8.
  • Massachusetts finished the 2015 season with a 5-10 overall, but earned an appearance in the CAA Championship Game (L, 9-8, vs. Towson).
  • UMass also opened five prior seasons with back-to-back ranked games, doing so in 1975, '76, '77, '84 and '88. National rankings are available beginning in 1973.

Firepower Retained

  • Massachusetts returns 89.0 percent of its goal production and 95.0 percent of its assists from one season ago. This makes UMass one of only five teams in the country returning at least 89.0 percent of its goals and assists.
  • The other four teams are Cleveland State, Dartmouth, Harvard and Rutgers.
