Softball Narrowly Misses Program Hit Record, Downs UConn 13-3

STORRS, Conn. – Erin Stacevicz tied the single-game record with five hits as UMass narrowly missed out on breaking a 40-year-old program record for hits in a game, finishing with 20 in a 13-3 win over UConn on the road Wednesday afternoon at the Burrill Family Field. The 20 hits for the Minutewomen (15-14 Overall) marked a season-high for a squad that has posted double-digit hits in three straight games for a total of 43.

Stacevicz added a pair of triples to go along with five RBI and three runs scored, moving the senior into the top-10 in the UMass record book for runs in a career as she passed Lauren Proctor (2005-08) and currently ranks 10th with 127. The five hits for the senior put her as one of five players in program history to reach the mark in a single game.

Kenadee Rausch tossed a complete seven innings while striking out five and allowing one earned run and two walks as the picked up the fourth win of her freshman campaign. Rausch settled in after UConn plated two runs in their first trip to the plate to take their only lead of the game at 2-1, retiring six straight batters from the second inning to the fourth before the Huskies added an unearned run in the fifth.

Caroline Videtto added a career-high four hits on five trips to the plate to go along with a RBI and a pair of runs scored. Videtto helped the Minutewomen tie up the contest at 2-2 in the top of the third inning with a RBI infield single that scored Kaitlyn Stavinoha from third.

Stavinoha pitched in a pair of hits, combining with Stacevicz for consecutive singles in the top of the fourth inning that led to a Kaycee Carbone RBI single up the middle to put UMass back ahead by a run and for the remainder of the game. Carbone finished the game with a pair of hits as one of six Minutewomen to record two or more in the win.

Melissa Garcia's second RBI of the day followed as the senior drove in the fourth run of the contest on a fielder's choice to put UMass up 4-2. Garcia's first RBI was an 11-pitch at-bat in the first inning that ended in a sacrifice fly to left field before she walked in a run in the fifth to finish with three RBI as UMass built a 7-2 lead.

After the Huskies scored a run in the bottom half of the fifth on a two-out RBI single, the Minutewomen and Stacevicz responded with a three-run sixth inning that started with a two-RBI Stacevicz triple before Stavinoha drove in Stacevicz from third to bring the count to 10-3.

UMass scored three more for the third-straight inning in its final trip to the plate in the seventh with Madison Gimpl driving in a single run prior to Stacevicz's second and final two-RBI triple. Gimpl finished with a pair of hits while Hannah Bunker added two as well with a pair of walks and a run scored.

The Minutewomen will be at home on Sortino Field this weekend for the first time this season as they play host to La Salle for a three-game series beginning on Saturday at noon.
