Softball Takes Two From La Salle In Home Opener

April 06, 2019 | Softball

Kaitlyn Stavinoha led the way for UMass offensively with six hits while Kiara Oliver picked up a win and a save.

AMHERST, Mass.Kaitlyn Stavinoha picked up six hits while Alyssa Lyon added four as the University of Massachusetts softball team picked up a pair of wins over La Salle in a home opening doubleheader at Sortino Field on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen (17-14 Overall, 5-1 Atlantic 10) scored seven unanswered runs in an 8-4 game two win while racking up 13 hits, marking the fourth game over the last five contests in which UMass has tallied 10 or more.

Game One – UMass 8, La Salle 0 (6 inn.) - Box Score
Kiara Oliver tossed 6.0 innings of shutout softball in an 8-0 game one win, holding the Explorers to two hits while striking out eight. Oliver struck out five batters in the first two innings of play to pass Kelli Arnold (2002-04, 273) for 12th on the UMass career strikeout list with 281 after the doubleheader.

Kaycee Carbone put UMass on the board in its first trip to the plate in game one, doubling to left center field to score Stavinoha as the Minutewomen maintained a one-run lead until extending it in the fifth inning with four runs.

Lyon started off the scoring in the fifth with a RBI single up the middle to bring in Caroline Videtto after a leadoff triple to deep right field. Lyon finished game one with a pair of hits in three trips to the plate.

Stavinoha finished game one 3-of-4 with four RBI and a run scored, picking up her first of two two-RBI base hits with a single through the right side that brought in Jackie Kelley and Riley Gregoire to push the UMass lead to 4-0.

Erin Stacevicz scored the fourth and final run of the fifth inning, crossing the plate on a wild pitch before bringing home a run on an error in the bottom of the sixth. Stacevicz finished with a pair of hits in four at-bats as the Minutewomen finished with nine.

Stavinoha's second two-RBI base knock scored Stacevicz and Amy Smith to seal the game in six innings, 8-0.

Game Two – UMass 8, La Salle 4 - Box Score
La Salle jumped out to a 4-1 lead before UMass responded with a four-run third inning to go ahead by a run on their way to adding three in the final two innings of an 8-4 win. Oliver entered the game in relief with two down in the top of the fifth inning to pick up her program-record seventh career save after replacing Quinn Breidenbach, who entered in relief and picked up her sixth win of the year after throwing 2.1 innings with no runs allowed.

Lyon's first of four RBI in game two tied things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning before the Explorers plated three runs to take their largest lead of the afternoon.

Some crafty baserunning from Stacevicz jumpstarted the four-run bottom of the third inning for UMass, scoring during a Stavinoha rundown after a flyout to deep center field. Hannah Bunker followed with a RBI to cut the lead down to a run before Lyon's two-RBI double to left center field gave UMass a lead in which it would hold for the remainder of the contest.

Lyon's fourth and final RBI of game two came by way of a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Melissa Garcia. Garcia finished game two a perfect 2-of-2 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and a walk.

Stavinoha kept it going at the plate in the bottom half of the sixth with her third home run of the year, a solo line drive shot over the wall in right to stretch the UMass lead to three runs. The home run for the senior marked her 100th career RBI as she became the 20th player in program history to hit the mark and currently ranks 20th all-time on the UMass career RBI list.

Bunker drove in her second run of game two shortly after with a RBI single down the left field line for one of her three hits in the doubleheader finale.

The Minutewomen and the Explorers will wrap up their three-game Atlantic 10 series tomorrow afternoon at noon on Sortino Field.
