Softball Takes Game Three Over Fordham Behind Complete Game From Breidenbach

April 28, 2019 | Softball

Quinn Breidenbach held Fordham to six hits with one run allowed in a 4-1 win over the Rams.

AMHERST, Mass.Quinn Breidenbach tossed her second complete game in as many days on her way to holding Fordham to a single run as the University of Massachusetts softball team secured a series win over the Rams with a 4-1 victory on Sunday at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen (23-19 Overall, 11-4 Atlantic 10) provided Breidenbach with all the run support she needed as she moved to 10-4 on the year, highlighted by a Kaitlyn Stavinoha two-run homer for her second of the series.

The Minutewomen scored in their first trip to the plate for the third straight game in the series, starting the scoring with a Kaycee Carbone RBI double to right center that plated Erin Stacevicz. The RBI marked the 100th of Carbone's career as the senior became the 21st player in program history to reach the mark while tying her sister Taylor Carbone for 20th-most all-time.

Stavinoha pushed the lead to three runs in the third with a two-run shot to right field after Stacevicz's second hit of the game put a runner on. The senior's fifth home run of the year gave the Minutewomen a 3-0 advantage before a solo homer from Jordy Storm in the top of the fourth provided the Rams with their lone run of the contest.

Hannah Bunker helped string together a two-out rally for UMass in the bottom half of the fourth after Kristina Day reached on an error before a Riley Gregoire single for one of her two hits. Bunker's RBI single gave UMass a three-run advantage that they held for the remainder of the game.

Breidenbach and the Minutewomen got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth inning with two down, forcing Storm into a flyout to Gregoire near foul territory to leave three Ram runners stranded. Fordham put two more runners on in their final trip to the plate in the seventh before a flyout and a popup to Stavinoha at short ended the game.

The Minutewomen will break from conference play as they host Providence on Sortino Field in the final home game of the regular season on Tuesday at 4 p.m. before traveling to Fairfax, Va. for the final league series of the year at George Mason.
