April 30, 2019 | Softball
Danielle Ellis hit a bases loaded two-RBI single to lead UMass by Providence in walk-off fashion.
AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Danielle Ellis hit a walk-off two RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs as the University of Massachusetts softball team defeated Providence 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen (24-19 Overall) started the bottom of the seventh inning rally with a single and then an error to put runners on with one out.
Kaycee Carbone recovered from down 0-2 in the count with two outs and runners on first and second, rallying back to work a walk that loaded the bases to set up Ellis' two-RBI walk-off winner. Hannah Bunker singled with one down to set up a Providence (28-20 Overall) error during Erin Stacevicz's at-bat that allowed Bunker to reach second safely.
The Friars jumped on the Minutewomen early in their first trip to the plate to open up the afternoon, stringing together four consecutive hits to bring home two runs with no outs on a Jessica Tomaso two-RBI single.
Quinn Breidenbach replaced Kenadee Rausch in the circle with no outs and a pair of runners on in the first, recording three straight outs to end the threat on her way to tossing 7.0 innings for the third straight contest. Breidenbach got the win to move to 11-4 on the year as she finished her day by striking out three with two earned runs allowed.
UMass quickly answered in the home half of the first to go ahead 3-2 after Bunker and Stacevicz started things off with back-to-back walks. Kaitlyn Stavinoha singled and moved Bunker home on a Providence throwing error to set up a Carbone RBI single to tie it at 2-2. Melissa Garcia put one in play to second that scored the third run to put the Minutewomen ahead 3-2.
Stavinoha finished the game 3-of-4 at the plate, recording base hits on her first three trips to the dish to reach 200 hits for her career and pass Scooter Wheeler and Jena Cozza for 16th on the all-time UMass career hits list.
The Minutewomen were held without a run until the final at-bat of the afternoon as Providence used a leadoff single to spark a one-run second inning before a Tomaso solo homer to right field gave the Friars a 4-3 lead.
Carbone finished with a pair of hits for UMass while Kristina Day added a hit of her own for a team that finished with eight on the day.
UMass wraps up its regular season this weekend with a three-game Atlantic 10 series on the road in Fairfax, Va. at George Mason on Saturday and Sunday.
