Softball Falls To Central Connecticut State, 6-4

April 10, 2019 | Softball

Melissa Garcia led the Minutewomen with a pair of hits to go along with a RBI and a run scored.

AMHERST, Mass. The University of Massachusetts softball team picked up eight hits but fell to Central Connecticut State 6-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen (18-15 Overall) were led offensively by Melissa Garcia's two-hit day to go along with a RBI and a run scored.

UMass opened up the afternoon with one of its best inning at the plate, scoring the first run of the contest by way of a Garcia RBI single after Jackie Kelley and Erin Stacevicz began the frame with back-to-back bunt singles. Hannah Bunker picked up a RBI single of her own the very next at-bat, sending a base hit to left center field to bring in Stacevicz and put UMass up 2-0 after one complete.

Central Connecticut State responded by putting three runs on the board to take a 3-2 advantage, using a Rian Eigenmann two-RBI double to bring in an earned and unearned run. The Blue Devils added a run in the fourth inning on a two-out solo home run to right field before plating two more in the seventh to push their lead to three at 6-3.

The Minutewomen used some crafty two-out baserunning in the bottom of the third to knot the game up at 3-3 as Bunker got herself into a rundown between first and second as Kaitlyn Stavinoha crossed the plate prior to her getting tagged out to end the inning.

UMass had chances to tie it up in both the fifth and sixth innings, putting a pair of runners in scoring position in the fifth while loading the bases up in the sixth. Caroline Videtto led the sixth off with a walk followed by a Madison Gimpl single and a Danielle Ellis walk that loaded the bases with one out before a strikeout and an over-the-shoulder catch in shallow right field left three Minutewomen stranded.

In the circle for the Minutewomen, Quinn Breidenbach tossed 4.0 innings while surrendering a pair of earned runs and four total before Kenadee Rausch threw the remaining 3.0 innings, allowing one earned while striking out three.

The Minutewomen resume Atlantic 10 play this weekend when they host George Washington for a three-game series beginning on Saturday at noon at Sortino Field.
