March 31, 2019 | Softball

Kaitlyn Stavinoha led the UMass offense with a career-high four hits in an 8-5 game one win.

ST. LOUIS, Mo.The University of Massachusetts softball team posted 13 hits behind a career-high four hits by Kailtyn Stavinoha in an 8-5 game one win of a doubleheader split at Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon. The Minutewomen (14-14 Overall, 3-1 Atlantic 10) scored the opening four runs of game two before seven unanswered by the Billikens guided Saint Louis to a 7-5 win.

Game One – UMass 8, Saint Louis 5 - Box Score
Stavinoha led the UMass offense with a new career-high four hits, picking up her first hit with a two-out single to spark a four-run opening inning for the Minutewomen. Hannah Bunker and Alyssa Lyon both walked in the first two runs of the afternoon before Amy Smith was hit-by-a-pitch to bring in the third. Bunker went on to score on a wild pitch, getting under the tag at the plate to put UMass ahead 4-0 after its first trip to the plate.

Kiara Oliver finished the afternoon with eight strikeouts in five innings of work, surrendering just one unearned run in the bottom half of the first inning while striking out seven through the first three. Oliver's eight on the game moved the sophomore to 269 in her career, passing Lisa Rever (1985-88, 265) for 13th most in a UMass career.

The run support for Oliver continued into the second inning after Jackie Kelley and Erin Stacevicz strung together consecutive singles to put a pair on for Stavinoha, who came through with a long RBI single off the wall in left center field. Melissa Garcia followed with a double to nearly the same spot in left center, picking up a RBI double to give the Minutewomen a 6-1 advantage.

Stavinoha's third hit opened up the fourth inning before Kaycee Carbone and Garcia each singled to load the bases with no outs. Bunker's second RBI of the day came by way of a single up the middle while Lyon followed with her second as well, a RBI single to left field to put UMass ahead 8-1.

Saint Louis added a run in the sixth and three in the seventh, using a two-run home run in their final at-bat to bring the score to a final 8-5.

Game Two – Saint Louis 7, UMass 5 - Box Score
The Minutewomen opened up game two in the same fashion as they began the doubleheader, scoring four runs in their first trip to the plate. Carbone started the scoring with a two-RBI single up the middle followed by Stavinoha crossing the plate on a wild pitch for the third run. Garcia brought in the fourth run with a sacrifice fly to deep right field that scored Carbone and put UMass up 4-0.

Saint Louis scored five runs in the first and second innings to take a 5-4 lead after two played, using a pair of two-run home runs in the first before scoring a run with two down in the bottom half of the second. The Billikens added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning with another two-run home run.

The Minutewomen began the top of the seventh with a Caroline Videtto single before a diving grab led to a bases-clearing double play. Stacevicz's second hit of game two was followed up by a Stavinoha two-out RBI single to deep center field to bring the score to a final 7-5.

UMass heads to Storrs, Conn. for a single midweek game at UConn on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before returning home to Sortino Field for the first time in 2019 to play host to La Salle next weekend.
