Three Multi-RBI Performers Guide UMass Past BC, 8-3
March 27, 2019 | Softball
Melissa Garcia, Kaitlyn Stavinoha and Kaycee Carbone each drove in two runs in the win.
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team scored seven runs over the final four innings on their way to an 8-3 win over Boston College on Wednesday afternoon at the Harrington Athletics Village. Melissa Garcia sparked a three-run fourth inning two-out two-RBI double to pace a UMass (13-13 Overall) offense that out-hit the Eagles nine to six.
Boston College took advantage of a pair of UMass walks and a two-out error in their first trip to the plate, going ahead 1-0 on the error prior to a throw into third from Erin Stacevicz that ended the Eagle threat. BC's Ellie Mataya picked up a one-out single in the third frame that eventually led to a Gianna Boccagno RBI single that put the Eagles up 2-1 after three played.
The Minutewomen put runners on early and often to open up the contest as two runners reached safely in both the first and second innings but UMass went into the third inning trailing by a run. UMass capitalized on a pair of BC errors in the top half of the third, beginning with a Jackie Kelley ball put in play to lead off the inning that allowed her to reach safely on an error. Kelley eventually moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout and went on to score on another BC error to tie it up at 1-1.
Kiara Oliver came through in a big spot in the second inning, striking out two batters consecutively to leave a runner stranded 60-feet from the plate as she struck out four batters through the first two complete innings. The sophomore picked up multiple strikeouts with runners on third, including one in the bottom of the fifth to maintain a 4-3 lead after BC pulled within one in the bottom of fourth. Oliver finished the day with nine strikeouts while allowing just one earned run in a complete game effort on her way to picking up her fifth win of the season.
Garcia helped put UMass on top 4-2 by highlighting a three-run fourth inning with a two-out, two-RBI double to the wall in left field that scored Jackie Kelley and Kaitlyn Stavinoha. Kaycee Carbone brought in the first run of the frame to tie things up at two runs each by working a bases loaded single.
UMass added four insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take an 8-3 lead into Boston College's final at-bat, plating two in both frames.
Stavinoha's first of two RBI opened the scoring in the sixth as her fourth triple of the year pushed UMass' lead to two before Carbone's second RBI of the afternoon wrapped up the scoring in the frame with the Minutewomen ahead 6-3.
Danielle Ellis brought in the first of two in the following UMass trip to the plate, sending a bases loaded single into the outfield for her sixth career RBI. Stavinoha followed by driving in her second run in as many innings with a RBI to score Kristina Day.
Riley Gregoire finished with a team-leading two hits for a squad that had eight different batters record a hit while Jackie Kelley scored three runs.
The Minutewomen return to Atlantic 10 play this weekend with a three-game series on the road at Saint Louis.
