The Opponent
UMass swept Saint Louis in a shortened series last year at Sortino Field, besting the Billikens 10-0 in five innings in the first game before another shutout 4-0 win in game two of the doubleheader. Melissa Garcia led the way in game one with a pair of hits and two RBI while Riley Gregoire drove in a pair in the win. In game two, Kaitlyn Stavinoha hit a solo shot to go along with Jena Cozza's three-run blast in the fifth frame.
Last Time Out
The Minutewomen picked up an 8-3 win on the road at Boston College the last time out, led by multi-RBI performances from Garcia, Stavinoha and Kaycee Carbone. Garcia jumpstarted the UMass offense in the fourth inning with a two-out, two-RBI double to left field that gave the Minutewomen a 4-2 lead before they tacked on a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win. Kiara Oliver struck out four through the first two innings on the way to finishing with nine, including a pair of timely back-to-back strikeouts in the second inning to keep UMass within a run by leaving a BC runner stranded at third.
Approaching 100
Stavinoha and Carbone are both within 10 RBI of reaching the 100 RBI mark for their careers. Stavinoha enters the weekend with 92 career RBI, needing seven more to pass Katie Bettencourt for 20th most all-time in a career while Carbone currently has 90 RBI. The seniors will become the 20th and 21st players in program history to eclipse the 100 RBI mark in a career.
Still Climbing
Oliver continues to climb up the UMass career strikeout list having struck out 46 batters over her last seven appearances dating back to an extra-innings contest against Villanova on March 9. The sophomore passed Caroline Raymond (2011-15) for 14th most strikeouts in a career and currently trails Lisa Rever (1985-88, 261) and Kelli Arnold (2002-04, 273) for 12th and 13th on the list. Oliver just cracked the top-20 in most appearances and currently ranks 4th in strikeouts per seven innings (7.17), 17th in career ERA (2.06) and 13th in walks allowed per game (2.14).
