BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team opened up the Atlantic 10 Conference season with a doubleheader sweep of St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at the BU Softball Field, taking game one 5-1 before holding off the Bonnies 5-4 in game two. Senior Erin Stacevicz moved into ninth all-time on the UMass career hit list as she finished the day with three hits to pass Candice Molinari and Lauren Proctor with 211 in her career.
Game One – UMass 5, St. Bonaventure 1
Hannah Bunker led the UMass offense in game one with a perfect 3-of-3 day at the plate, helping orchestrate the first Minutewoman run of the game in the second inning with a single that put two runners on with no outs. After an Alyssa Lyon sacrifice bunt moved two Minutewomen into scoring position, a pinch-running Kristina Day reached home on a wild pitch to put UMass ahead 1-0.
The Minutewomen added four runs of insurance in the bottom of the fifth frame as the inning opened up with an Stacevicz double to left followed by a Jackie Kelley single for one of her two hits in the opener.
Kaitlyn Stavinoha drove in the first run with a RBI double before Kaycee Carbone followed with a RBI extra-base hit of her own, a two-RBI double down the right field line to put UMass up 4-0. Bunker added the fourth and final run with a RBI base hit to left as the Minutewomen finished the inning with six of their nine total hits in the contest.
Kiara Oliver earned her fourth win of the season in the circle as she held the Bonnies to just three hits and one run in the top of the sixth inning on her way to striking out seven.
Game Two – UMass 5, St. Bonaventure 4
The Minutewomen rattled off four hits to bring in four runs in the bottom of the 4th on their way to completing the doubleheader sweep, led by multi-RBI games from Stacevicz and Stavinoha.
The pair of seniors each drove in a pair in the fourth, beginning with a Stacevicz two-RBI double over the left fielder for her second hit of the game before Stavinoha came through with a two-RBI double to score Stacevicz and Kelley to put the Minutewomen ahead 5-0.
The Bonnies answered with two runs in the fifth inning to pull within three runs before driving in two more with the game-tying run on second to end the contest.
Oliver came into the circle in relief of Quinn Breidenbach and Kenadee Rausch to close out the game with consecutive outs, ending the game with a strikeout while giving her six career saves to move into a tie with Brandice Balschmiter for most career saves in UMass history. Breidenbach picked up the win to improve to 5-2 on the year as the junior finished with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work while allowing a pair of runs.
The Minutewomen will break from conference play on Wednesday with a single game at 4 p.m. at Boston College.
