Softball Picks Up Doubleheader Sweep To Open Purple And Gold Invite

March 01, 2019 | Softball

Kaitlyn Stavinoha led the offense with a 6-of-8 day at the plate to go along with four RBI.

GREENVILLE, N.C.  Senior outfielder Kaitlyn Stavinoha set the tone for the UMass offense with six hits in eight trips to the plate to go along with four RBI as the Minutewomen opened up play at the Purple and Gold Invitational with a pair of wins over Columbia and Winthrop. Kiara Oliver picked up a win in a 5-0 victory over Columbia before closing out the afternoon with a save in a 3-2 win over Winthrop in eight innings.

Game One – UMass 5, Columbia 0 - Box Score
Oliver tossed 5.2 innings of no-hit softball on her way to her second win of the season. The sophomore allowed just two hits with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, finishing the outing with two strikeouts in six innings thrown. Oliver became the 18th player in UMass program history to eclipse the 200-career strikeout mark and currently trails Carrie Jeffries (1998-2001, 205) by three strikeouts for 17th-most all-time.

Stavinoha led the UMass offense with three hits in four appearances at the plate as she helped open up the scoring with a one-out single up the middle in the third inning. Kaycee Carbone followed a Madison Gimpl walk with a single through the right side to load the bases for Hannah Bunker, who fought off a trio of pitches to work a full count walk that brought in a run to put UMass up 1-0.

Riley Gregoire hit a one-out double to left field to put a pair of runners in scoring position for Stavinoha in the fourth inning, who came through with two-RBI single on her third hit of the morning to put the Minutewomen ahead 3-0.

UMass added two more runs in the top half of the fifth, beginning with a Bunker leadoff single to right followed by an Amy Smith double. Erin Stacevicz reached base safely three times in the contest, tallying her first base hit by way for a line drive single to center field to bring in the fourth run. Jackie Kelley added the fifth and final run on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Smith from third.

Quinn Breidenbach closed out the game in the circle for UMass in the seventh inning, sending Columbia down in order to secure the win and the shutout.

Game Two – UMass 3, Winthrop 2 (8 inn.) - Box Score
UMass brought in three unanswered runs to come from behind and beat Winthrop after the Eagles scored their only two runs in the opening frame on three hits to go up 2-0.

Kenadee Rausch retired seven straight batters after allowing the pair of runs in the first as she threw three innings and struck out one batter before being replaced in the circle by Breidenbach after Winthrop put together consecutive singles to open up the fourth inning. Breidenbach allowed just two hits in four innings of work on her way to picking up the win.

The Minutewomen got a run back in the top half of the third inning as Gregoire tallied one of her two hits in the ball game with two down. Stavinoha followed with one of her two RBI in the second game of the day, slamming a RBI double to deep right field that scored Gregoire from first base. Gregoire and Stavinoha jumpstarted the UMass offense once again in the top of the fifth after consecutive singles eventually set up a Gimpl sacrifice fly to left center field that barely stayed inside the park to bring in the tying run.

With Gregoire at second due to the international tiebreak to start the top of the eighth, Stavinoha picked up her third hit of the contest to bring in the eventual game-winning run with a RBI double that brought the score to 3-2.

Bunker added a pair of hits for a UMass squad that posted nine hits in the extra-inning win.

Oliver entered the circle in relief during the bottom of the eighth inning with UMass holding a one-run lead. Alyssa Lyon secured a ground ball at third during the first at-bat, tossing it over to Stavinoha covering the bag to retire the international tiebreak runner that Winthrop had on second for the first out of the inning as UMass went on to retire the next two hitters to secure the win. Oliver's second save of the year and fourth of her career moved her into a tie for third-most all-time.

The Minutewomen continue play at the Purple and Gold Invitational tomorrow against Winthrop at 12:30 p.m. before taking on host East Carolina at 5:30 p.m.
