Softball Defeats Providence 3-1 For First Win Of Season At Diamond 9

Riley Gregoire led the way for UMass with three hits in the win over the Friars.
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – UMass rallied from an early deficit against Providence to come from behind for a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom. The win marked the first of the season for the Minutewomen, whose comeback from down three runs against Iowa fell just short in a 5-3 loss earlier in the morning.
Game One - Iowa 5, UMass 3 - Box Score
UMass responded at the plate after falling behind 3-0 in the third inning, driving in three runs on four hits in the bottom half to tie things up at 3-3.
Erin Stacevicz led things off in the frame with one of her three base hits in the contest, singling through the left side to put a runner on. Kaycee Carbone recorded the second hit with one down to left field to put a pair of UMass runners on.
After Madison Gimpl walked to load the bases with two down, freshman Danielle Ellis came through with a two-out, full count double down the line in left to score Stavinoha and Carbone. Melissa Garcia added the tying run the following at-bat, chopping a single over the outstretched glove of the Iowa pitcher to score Gimpl and tie it up at 3-3.
The Minutewomen denied Iowa a scoring chance in the top of the fifth inning, leaving a pair of runners stranded after a pair of Hawkeye singles.
Iowa broke the deadlock in the top of the seventh to secure the win on a two-run home run by DoniRae Mayhew.
Game Two - UMass 3, Providence 1 - Box Score
The UMass offense posted nine hits in the final contest of the weekend against the Friars, paced by Riley Gregoire's three hits in four plate appearances to go along with a run scored. The Minutewomen had seven different hitters record a base hit while eight reached base safely.
Kenadee Rausch picked up her first collegiate win in the circle for the Minutewomen, tossing 4.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts while allowing just four hits and one unearned run in the opening inning.
Kiara Oliver entered in relief of Rausch with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, retiring all but one Providence batter on her way to her third career save. Oliver needed just two pitches to get the Minutewomen out of a bases loaded jam.
The Minutewomen scored a pair in the top of the third, tying it up on a Stavinoha double to the gap in right center field. Gimpl added another with a RBI single up the middle to put UMass ahead 2-1.
UMass got another run of insurance by way of a Danielle Ellis RBI in the fifth to score Carbone.
The Minutewomen will return to the field on Friday, Feb. 22 when they take on Belmont at 1 p.m. as part of a doubleheader at the Georgia Classic.
