April 21, 2018 | Softball

The Minutewomen moved to a perfect 13-0 record in Atlantic 10 play with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

OLEAN, N.Y. The University of Massachusetts softball team remained perfect in Atlantic 10 play as they took both games in a league doubleheader against St. Bonaventure on Saturday at Joyce Field. The Minutewomen (25-12 Overall, 13-0 Atlantic 10) controlled all of game one in a series-opening win before posting four runs in the top of the seventh in game two on their way to a 5-1 win.

Game One – UMass 10, St. Bonaventure 1 (6 Innings) - Box Score
Seven different Minutewomen recorded base hits in the series-opening win, led by multi-hit games from Kaitlyn Stavinoha, Melissa Garcia and Riley Gregoire. Garcia's first hit of the afternoon drove in the opening run of the ballgame in the top of the first inning with a single that ended up bringing in Jena Cozza on a Bonnies (8-28 Overall, 1-14 A-10) error.

Garcia kept it going at the plate with her third home run of the season and her second in as many games in the third inning, sending a shot over the wall in right field to bring in Erin Stacevicz while extending the UMass lead to three runs.

Gregoire recorded her first of two hits in the fourth inning to push the UMass lead to 4-0, reaching on an infield single to drive in Stavinoha from third.

Meg Colleran retired eight straight St. Bonaventure hitters after allowing her first hit in the second inning on her way to earning her 10th win of the season. Colleran tossed 6.0 innings, allowing her only run of the afternoon in the fifth inning as the Bonnies trimmed the UMass lead to three runs.

A six-run sixth inning on six helps helped the Minutewomen end the game early after going ahead 10-1 at the end of the frame. Stavinoha reached base successfully for the third time in the contest on her second hit with no outs, singling to bring in a pinch-running Caroline Videtto from second to open the scoring. Stavinoha finished the game with a pair of hits while scoring two runs and driving in one.

Gregoire drove in her second run after Hannah Bunker was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases with no down, singling for her second hit. Cozza followed with a two-RBI double down the left field line to bring her season RBI total to a team-leading 45 before Stacevicz drove in a run of her own the following at-bat. Kaycee Carbone capped off the inning with a RBI double to deep right center field to bring the count to a final 10-1.

Game Two – UMass 5, St. Bonaventure 1 - Box Score
Stacevicz went 3-of-3 at the plate with three singles and a walk in game two, picking up the only two UMass hits through the first innings as the Minutewomen moved a pair of runners into scoring position in both the first and third innings. UMass could not push a run across through the first five innings, leaving eight runners stranded as the Bonnies went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

UMass scored their first run of the game in the fifth inning to tie things up at 1-1 after singles from Gregoire and Stacevicz helped load the bases for Carbone, who came through with a sacrifice fly to deep left field to bring in a run.

The Minutewomen went on to load the bases in the inning, but could not push a run across as the score remained knotted heading into the seventh inning.

Cozza opened up the seventh with a leadoff double that landed on the left field line prior to consecutive walks by Stacevicz and Carbone to load the bases for the second time in the last three innings of play. Cozza extended her reached base streak to 33 straight games with the double.

Madison Gimpl converted with the bases loaded, clearing the bags with a one-out and two-strike double to center field that gave UMass a 4-1 advantage. Stavinoha followed with a two-out single to right field that brought home Gimpl from second base to bring the count to 5-1.

Kiara Oliver closed things out with a one, two, three-inning in the seventh as she picked up the 13th win of her freshman campaign. Oliver allowed just two hits and one run while striking out eight in 7.0 innings of work.

The Minutewomen and the Bonnies will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at noon on Joyce Field.
