Softball Defeats Bonnies 5-2 To Sweep Fifth League Series

April 22, 2018 | Softball

Madison Gimpl and Kaitlyn Stavinoha led the way with a pair of hits each while driving four combined runs.

OLEAN, N.Y. – The University of Massachusetts softball team closed out their fifth Atlantic 10 series sweep on Sunday afternoon with 5-2 win over St. Bonaventure at Joyce Field. The Minutewomen (26-12 Overall, 14-0 A-10) were led offensively by Madison Gimpl and Kaitlyn Stavinoha as the duo finished with two hits apiece while Kiara Oliver threw 5.0 innings of shutout softball in the circle.

Riley Gregoire opened up a three-run third inning with a single over third base into left field before the second-time through the order for the Minutewomen helped push three across with two outs in the frame. Gregoire came around to score the first run of the afternoon on a Jena Cozza rundown between first and second with runners at the corners.

Gimpl came through with her first of two hits with two down, sending a double down the left field line to bring in Cozza and Garcia while giving the Minutewomen a 3-0 advantage. Gimpl kept it going during her next at-bat with more clutch hitting, doubling to the gap in left center field to drive in Kaycee Carbone all the way from first base on her second hit and third RBI of the day.

Kaitlyn Stavinoha's second hit capped off a two-run frame as she sent a single to right field to drive in Gimpl from second to bring the score to 5-0 after five played.

Oliver picked up her team-leading 14th win of the season as she held the Bonnies (8-29 Overall, 1-15 A-10) without a run through the first five innings of play. The freshman struck out seven while allowing just three hits.

St. Bonaventure scored their only two runs of the afternoon in the bottom of the seventh inning off Quinn Breidenbach in relief to cut the lead to three before a groundout ended the game with a pair of Bonnies runners left on. Breidenbach struck out three in her two innings of work.

UMass will return home to Sortino Field for a midweek league matchup against Rhode Island on Tuesday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader before taking on regional opponent UConn on Wednesday.
