Garcia’s Five RBI Leads UMass To Five-Inning Win Over Hartford

Melissa Garcia finished with two hits and five RBI to lead a trio of multi-hit performers.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team returning to the win column on Thursday afternoon with an 8-0 win over Hartford in five innings at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen (23-12 Overall) posted eight hits in the win behind three multi-hit performers, led by Melissa Garcia's five RBI that included a second-inning grand slam for her second home run of the season.
Riley Gregoire helped put UMass on the board in the second inning with a RBI on a groundout that scored Kaitlyn Stavinoha before Erin Stacevicz drove in Hannah Bunker on a single to put two runners on with the Minutewomen up 2-0. Stacevicz finished the afternoon with two hits on three at-bats and a run scored.
Kaycee Carbone reached on a two-out walk to load the bases for Garcia, who picked up her second career homer with a shot over the wall in right field to clear the bases and push the lead up to six runs.
Garcia picked up her fifth and final RBI to bring her season total to 26 in the fourth frame, doubling down the right field line to score Carbone all the way from first base.
Madison Gimpl recorded her second hit of the ballgame the following at-bat, sending a RBI single to center field that scored Garcia to bring the score to a final 8-0.
Meg Colleran earned the win in the circle to move to 9-5 on the season in 3.0 innings of work, striking out a pair while holding Hartford without a base hit for the first two innings before the Hawks recorded their first and only hit to leadoff the top of the third inning.
Quinn Breidenbach entered the circle in relief in the fourth inning on her way to holding Hartford without a base hit during her two innings, picking up a strikeout while walking one batter.
UMass returns to Atlantic 10 play this weekend for a three-game series in Olean, N.Y. against St. Bonaventure, beginning on Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
