Riley Gregoire led the way offensively with a 3-of-3 game at the plate.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped their first game of the season at Sortino Field after winning eight straight on their home grass as Boston College came away with a 5-0 win on Wednesday. Riley Gregoire led the way offensively with a 3-of-3 day at the plate on three singles for a UMass (22-12 Overall) team that posted all seven of their hits after two outs in the third frame.
Gregoire put UMass into the hit column with two down in the bottom of the third inning with her first single for the first team hit of the day after Boston College (23-17 Overall) scored two runs in each of the first two frames to go ahead 4-0.
Kiara Oliver entered the game in relief with one down in the second inning, retiring eight straight batters after replacing Meg Colleran in the circle on her way to finishing the game with seven strikeouts. Oliver allowed just three hits in 5.2 innings of work, one a solo home run by Chloe Sharabba in the fourth inning on Oliver's first hit allowed to put BC up 5-0.
The UMass offense kept putting runners on down the stretch as at least one reached base safely in the final five innings. Jena Cozza extended her reach base streak to 30 straight games with a fourth-inning single through the right side and into the outfield before adding a walk in the bottom of the seventh.
The Minutewomen loaded the bases with two down in the fifth inning, beginning with a Kaitlyn Stavinoha bunt single followed a Hannah Bunker walk and Gregoire's second base hit of the game before Stavinoha was thrown out at the plate to end the frame.
Erin Stacevicz and Kaycee Carbone each singled with one down in the sixth inning prior to Melissa Garcia reaching on a free pass to put three runners on once again, but UMass could not push a run across in the frame as they left eight runners stranded on the game.
UMass is scheduled to return to action tomorrow for a home doubleheader against Hartford beginning at 1 p.m. followed by game two at 3 p.m.
