Softball Defeats Eastern Michigan In Friday Split

UMass opened the day with a 5-3 win over Eastern Michigan before falling in extras to Louisville.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Massachusetts softball team split a pair of games on the opening day of the Louisville classic, posting 10 hits in a 5-3 win over Eastern Michigan before falling down the stretch to Louisville in extra innings in the nightcap, 5-4.
Game One – UMass 5, Eastern Michigan 3 - Box Score
The UMass (8-7 Overall) offense strung together 10 hits against the Eagles (4-13 Overall), reaching 10 or more hits for the seventh time in the last nine contests as three different Minutewomen posted multi-hit games.
Kaycee Carbone led the way with a 3-of-4 effort at the plate on her way to scoring a pair of runs and driving in one on a solo home run in the fifth inning for her fourth of the season.
Hannah Bunker added two hits of her own, including a RBI single in the opening inning with the bases loaded to score Jena Cozza and give UMass an early 1-0 advantage. Melissa Garcia followed with one of her two hits, sending a line-drive single to left field to bring in Carbone and Kaitlyn Stavinoha to go ahead 3-0. Garcia finished the day with three RBI.
Carbone's home run opened up the bottom of the fifth inning to push the UMass lead back to two runs after Eastern Michigan scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings to pull within a score. Bunker's second hit of the day led to another Garcia RBI base hit that brought the count to 5-2 before EMU scored their final run of the game in the sixth inning with no outs.
Kiara Oliver improved to 4-1 in the circle as she tossed 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts and two earned runs allowed. Oliver left five EMU baserunners stranded, including two in scoring position in the sixth inning after the Eagles plated a run with no outs.
Game Two – Louisville 5, UMass 4 (8 Innings) - Box Score
The Minutewomen struck first in the final game of the Friday doubleheader as Jackie Kelley drove in a run with the bases loaded after a pair of singles from Garcia and Madison Gimpl in the second inning.
Gimpl gave UMass a 4-0 advantage over Louisville (17-4 Overall) in the bottom of the sixth inning, slamming a three-run home run just inside the pole in left field after Garcia extended the inning with a full count walk to put a pair of runners on. The home run was Gimpl's first of the season and her career while marking the 14th home run of the season as a team for the Minutewomen.
Meg Colleran tossed 7.1 innings, keeping Louisville off the board with some timely pitching and defense for the first six innings. UMass got out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning to keep the Cardinals scoreless before a relay from Kelley and Alyssa Lyon took down a Louisville runner at the plate in the fifth inning to retain a 1-0 UMass lead. Colleran surrendered just one earned run while striking out two.
Louisville capitalized one a few UMass miscues in the bottom of the seventh to tie things up with four runs, four hits and an error to go to the eighth knotted at 4-4. The Cardinals would add the winning run in the eighth inning, moving over the international tiebreaker runner to third on a putout before scoring on a single the following at-bat.
UMass returns to the field tomorrow morning for a 10 a.m. matchup against Bradley and will wrap up the day with a rematch against Louisville at 3 p.m.
